I was driving to work this morning around 70mph and BOOM, it sounded like I ran over somthing and it hit the bottom of my truck. When I got to work I saw the return intercooler pipe blew out of the boot. Anyone know what might cause this besides a loose boot? (they were all really tight after w/w install).
maybe you over torqued them. somewhere on the boot it says to not overtighten. did you clean all the boots with acetone or similar when they were out? if you dont have the CCV mod done, there is your culprit. the crank case vents oil mist into the vaccuum of the intake air boot. the oil mist goes through the turbo charger, and through all of the intake piping. it leaves a oily film on all of the parts. some people even have had oil in their intercooler. your boot was probably lubed up enough that it just popped off at a high boost level.
check my gallery, i have pics of my ccv mod that i did, it only cost about $8 for the piece of hose. i had the superglue and the bung to tie it in my exhaust already.
AAHHH, the old boom! It has happened to quite a few folks. The oily residue around the boots is probably the culprit. Make sure you clean the mating surfaces real good before putting them back together, that is the key.
Yes, I did clean the boots real good before renstalling, and also yes there was oil in both intercooler tubes, boots, 5-way, and into the intake ports (orange boots). I was considering the ccv mod but now I'm gonna go for it!
That brings me to another question while i'm at it. With all that oil in the system, that would lead me to believe that the intercooler is quite oily also. Is there any know way to clean them out?

Take it off the truck and lay it face down. Fill it with a solution of detergent and water. Agitate. Dump out. Repeat until all the oil is removed. Rince until clear.
Big project. I haven't gotten around to doing mine yet either.
I have also read where others have cleaned it in different manners and did not get much out. MHO it is not worth pulling just for a cleaning. After I did my CCV mod, I do not get any more oily residue on the boots.
If You Decide Not To Do The Ccv Mod ( I Have Not But Should ) Then At Least Reclean All Of The Connections To Remove All The Oil Film And Then Spray The Connections With Hairspray. This Should Help Them From Slipping Off Again. This Is What I Did And Have Not Blew A Boot Since. I Have Checked Them Periodically And Have Not Noticed Any Sighs Of Slippage.
