can anyone recommend a brand of dye for hard plastic (as door panels) and vinyl? I am planning to dye my panels but am a little hesitant. If i can't get a good job, I'll just wait til I can afford new panels.

A cheaper & more diversified way is to purchase the PREVAL painting system.
The glass jar attachment with paint or dye of your choice is sprayed on with the attached spray nozzle. This system costs $12.00 and can be used over and over again.
Spray bombs filled with ONE kind of paint or dye cost about $17.00 around here.

I'm doing a Mustang right now, but the principals still apply. You could check a mustang supply catalog for the dye. I'm using Mustangs Unlimited. What I've found is the surface MUST be ABSOLUTELY clean. I've used laquer thinner, acetone, and a degreasing cleaner with varying success. Napa sells a vinyl primer that works ok to prevent fish eyes. There is also a vinyl prep solution that you should use.
JC Whitney has the dye you are inquiring about. It is in the interior accessory section. It is spendy, but the prep cleaner and primer etc. are available. I did my door panels recently and they turned out pretty good. The other comments about fisheyes are true - make sure you use degreaser and amonia (or window cleaner) before spraying. I can not comment on durability - it has been too soon to tell for my panels. For a two door truck it is probably cheaper to buy the replacements than to hassle with the dye.
