okay i am hoping that i can get a answer here. I recently ordered ram air scoops for my 87 ranger 2.9L 2wd. Durring the endless weight for the scoops i started to fool around withand easier and more uniqe way to get that lovely cold air we all crave for. To do this i made a a short ram cold air intake that place a cone filter right in a opening i made then costom built a cone flush into the grill bassicly opening a really cool hole in the front of my truck that the filter sits in and dranks all the cold air it can have. But this casued a few problems. First I have people qestioning me about the filters placement in direct air. mainly there worries being if it rains i would suck in water. is this possible ? if i put up a fine mesh would that stop the water abosorbtion or maybe a non restrictive grill in the openning? Also i am now stuck with 2 ram air scoops and i love the way they look on my truck. I was woundering that if i can open up one or 2 of the hood scoops would it decrease the engin temp? and would the air just flow over the engin under the car and out the back? or would it just be all one big drag? any help would be great i hope someoen can answer my qestion thx in advance!
i wouldn't put your cold air intake directly in the grill, if i would have done it i would have went through the sidepanel if u can make a big enough hole in it where there is airflow that would be the safest way to do it, because if u take a chance in the rain make sure u have a cell phone or wait until the rain stops :-/. If u think about it.. Anywhere direct airflow is there will be water particles in it if it is raining
well one thx vary much for answering.....though i do wounder becasue i see open air filters running on the imports all the time. though tonight it rained preety bad on the drive home and i didn't seem to have any problem at all. I woundering sense the filter is greased its not sucking it in plus the intake is sucking upand i know from physicsthat air is lighter then water so tom i will pop my filter off if i notice condensation at the bottom then i figure something out. But like everyone i would love to have more opinions on this from anyone who has an open element filter or a hood scoop. thx again
hmm i might have to pull back the filter and costom fab a curve into a box. Do you think if i put up a screen or a mesh infront or between the the opening and the filter will that stop the direct contact with the filter and the rain enough but still alow optimal flow?
sorry bout being confusing but i had been up for 20hours. if you could post up a pick that would be a lot eaiser to understand just where the filter is and how to countact the moister problem. btw how do you post up a pic?
Open element filter? Like a K&N, right? Those can't suck water in unless they are fully submerged. And even then the engine dies before any can get by it. As long as its oiled properly, water can't get through.
yeah its a K&N cone filter with the open end insert. And sense i have to drive past a lovely rock quary everday in and out of town i find myself washing and greasing it atleast once every 2 weeks(1 a week in the dry and dusty season) so thats really good to know. thx for your help
