My buddy has a 7.3 that went in for a turbo replacement last summer. Since then he has had low power; I mean its a dog now. I drive it once in a while when we are hunting or fishing. He found out today that they also did a reprogram when they replaced the turbo at 50K. It went in today because the front wheel bearings went south.
Anyways is there anything to be done about the loss of power?
Dealer said they have to leave the new program in for smog and he'll have to live without the original power; they can't put it back.
is the only option a chip/programmer?
I have a 6.0, but mine's fine.

That's true. The dealer will not put an older revision back in, if a newer update for his PCM comes out they will install it, but other than that he'll have to go to the aftermarket.

Are you guys sure they put everything back correctly? Doesn't have a boost leak, or big exhaust leak does it?

I am reasonably sure that if the turbo replacement was with the same as what came off the truck, there should have been no reason to reprogram. If there had been a modification before, then the truck would have been voided of warrenty. Judging by your post I am not sure if it had been. I would contact DP-Turner and run this by them. Yes they will want to sell you their product, but you need to talk to someone that knows some of the rules. The date of manufacture usually sets the smog configuration of said vehicle. Changes aren't always possible without effect in performance, especially if the engine was not set up for it to begin with.

If there is an updated program available when your truck goes in for maintenance they will update it. They are supposed to tell you about it, but I can't remember the number of times it's been posted that people have been reflashed not only without their permission, but without their knowledge.

THIS JUST AIN'T RIGHT. IT SEEMS THAT A FELLA SHOULD GET HIS VEHICLE RETURNED BACK TO HIM WITH THE SAME PERFORMANCE IT HAD OR BETTER THAN WHEN HE TOOK IT IN REGARDLESS OF THE EPA.
I MEAN, HE SHOULD HAVE THE SAME PROGRAM IN IT THE WAY IT WAS WHEN HE BOUGHT IT.
I'M NEVER GOING TO THE DEALER UNLESS I HAVE NO OTHER CHOICE.

Wow!! cookie88, I am surprised. I wonder if the MAP or other controlling sensors are compatable with updated programs set to an older configuration.. Be asured that I am no computer guru. With your mentioned post, I would then consider looking for loose conections. Problem there is one needs to know the what was where before installation. I am glad my truck is out of warrenty, I can now modify without concern, at least until the environmental people get on the band wagon

Thanks I'll give him the info...he's somewhat auto knowledgeable- he bulids fire trucks and rescue vehicles from the ground up, custom order; he's the one who designs them. He's a very skilled mechanic- but is baffled and I know both of us crawled around looking for something wrong.

Can you tell the dealer not to do any updates and will they comply with your request? I've read about the same thing happening to people, reprogramming without their knowledge and not being told about it. It's really not a good business practice because of the dissatisfaction it generates.
