Take it into a parts store, tell them what you've got, and see if they've got one that matches. Fairly easy. You buy the rebuilt one and leave them your old one. Done and done.
Soon you will see rebuild service at your local three ring circus parts stores like Advance, Pep Boys, Oreileys, AZ. I know for sure that one is getting ready to start such a program. They are all greedy copycats so if one does it the rest will follow suit. I just wish they would stop trying to put forth the image that parts stores are staffed with mechanics who know magically what is wrong with your car based on laymans description.
Hi, my car is making a clicking sound. What do I need? How do I do it? Will you do it for me for FREE? I think its a Chebby....What do you mean I need a mechanic? Don't they charge money? Geez what a rip off. You guys always give me the wrong part. No I don't have a receipt. I buy a lot of stuff here. Aint it in the computer? Why is this taking so long?
What have we become?
Sorry, just venting while on vacation from CUSStomer service

I feel your pain, Greg. I was a counterman for about five years--pretty good at diagnosing the chugga-chugga sounds, but then again, we almost always had auto tech students from the local technical college working at the store, too. Had to show down more than one drunk customer with a "bad starter" or "brake drums that were just fine to be resurfaced" et cetera. Oh well. C'est la vie, n'est pas?
I have purchased y block and inline bendix at NAPA. You need to go to a good parts guy that knows the book not a guy that cant find anything pre 66 as it aint in the puter......
I have a box full of early NOS bendix that i keep to try and match something up. some ford, some dodge, and chevrolet.
I will look and see if i have something that is similar to one of the spare 223 starters i have.
Not to stir things but how did the 390 starter bolt up? the pre 65 starters are large and use a pull type bendix that is exterior to the starter barrell.
If this is an option on the 223 it will also work on the 292????
i was told that this starter was used on almost all the engines of this basic year, but im not sure how good this bit of info is, the guy at the yard i go to said this
