Need some info or help
The hubs won't move. Is job of taking apart the hubs to clean etc
so they work hard .need info
4 wheel works inside
They are set on auto
do your hubs say "auto" and "lock" on the outside of the hub. mine dont and they are not supposed to turn.
As far as I know, all 4x4 Excursions came with automatic hubs that can be manually overridden via the **** on the hub... even if the hub does not say lock-auto. And that is a good thing because the vacuum operated hubs often do not work, because of dirt, road grime, bad seals, bad vacuum switches, and deteriorating vacuum hoses.
If your ***** don't turn, drown them in WD-40 and try again. Unfortunately, these hubs are not made to be disassembled. There is one seal (o-ring) that can be replaced. It seals the hub assembly to the front wheel assembly. Otherwise you have to replace the hub at $250-$300. For about the same money you can get good Warn hubs.
rozett, thanks i am going to try that. also gonna go to the dealer before i do that because i'll be more mad at myself if i try to turn them and break the ****. then poof--$250-300. man that would suck.
The hubs cannot be "broken". If they're froze up and won't turn by hand get a pair of pliers or Channelocks and use them. MAKE SURE THE ESOF SWITCH IS OFF. What will happen is as you are turning the hubs with the pliers you'll see dust coming out of the seam. With 4x4 engaged vacuum has the potential to pull that dust in.
You can also watch for these auto hubs on E-Bay. I believe there is one (or was) one on there this week, new in box.
I'm thinking that your dial in the center should rotate, regardless of what the service rep said. Ford had an automatic hub with no manual override function back in the 90's but those were never used on the SuperDuty/Excursions. It's always been the vacuum pulselock with manual override if you ordered the ESOF 4x4. Check out another newer truck, even the 05's & 06's, and the hub should be the same, just yours has no writing on it. Then check out the arrow pointing to "Lock" and yours should rotate in that direction.
The old auto hubs with no manual override were a nightmare. They worked when they wanted to and you had no way of knowing if they would engage. You also had to move 10' after switching into 4x4 in order for them to engage....sometimes. That's why Ford dropped them in favor of the pulselocks.
It Does Have Esof But The Manual Does Not Sat That You Have To Back Up Or Even Pull Forward To Engauge The 4x4. I'll Have To Try And Turn Them With Pliers Later And Hope For The Best.
