okay i am having the lovly rocker clicking going on in my truck and i would like to take a look at it just to see whats wrong. i have an 87 ranger 2.9 and i want to do all this work inside the truck. i know that after draining the oil i can remove the valve covers to see the rockers, but i don't know what to look for once under there(i.e dammage wise i know what the rocker and assmbly looks like.) and what problems to look for that would cause me to change them. Is ther eany minor things that can be fixed if spoted? and what replacement rokers would you recomend? the bore, rods and springs are still stock so i don't want anything so strong that i break something but i would love something that reduces friction so i can have a lil more beter accel while passing the rice beaters(sometimes its not as fun comming from behind to whip there *** as it is from the line) thx everyone!!!
It's probably more or less the lifters. It's a common 2.9L problem. I imagine you would need to change the lifters which would require you to remove the heads. You will need new head gaskets, head bolts, lower intake gasket, and I imagine a few other various things. You can take the valve covers off whenever you want. Try to keep the bolt threads and threads in the heads clean to aviod stripping things out. Make sure to follow the procedure of putting them back on. They get torqued very little, engine needs warmed up, then you need to re-torque them.
The rocker arms are actually not too bad, get a repair manual and it will list most of the tolerances for parts that are out of wear.
You don't need anything outragous to beat rice beaters. But it all depends what they have under the hood. You have to remember that they weigh a lot less.
yeah do you recomend any replacement rockers just incase? becasue if it comes to the point i am just going to through in some free floating rocker assembly. And the weight thing is true. i wish i could lay carbon fiber. just the hood alone would cut weight into nothing. and its not like i have problems beating them now anyways i just wan tto make them cry a lil lol

If I were just replacing stock rockers on a stock engine, I would probably get the cheapest ones I could find (new of coarse) . I'm saving for the roller tip rocker arms at camcraftcams.com, those are high performance though. There's only so much you can modify on your 2.9 engine before the computer just can't take it. Especially camming the engine. The roller tips have a different rocker ratio and will increase valve lift.
If you just want more acceleration, you may look into getting a better rear end gearing ratio. Anything internal is like a cascading effect. If you upgrade one thing, something else will need to be upgraded or modified for that original upgrade to make a noticable difference. Otherwise it will just be a waste.
