'56 gauges

I just picked up a really nice looking used speedo with temp and fuel gauges too. I've been trying to get some info on how to to test gauges on the bench without using the float unit as a controller. You know, something simple like simply connecting a voltage source across the terminals.

I foud a post thaty said 1.5 volts across the terminals will cause a good gauge to read 1/2 full and another post that said 3 volts. I have tried both using AA bateries and get no movement.

The gas gauge reads empty and the temp gauge reads hot as they sit.

Can anybody shed a little lihjt on the subject? I'd like to determine whether the gauges work before I install the cluster.

Thanks-
Steve

Steve, your 1956 Shop manual has all the info you need to test the fuel, oil pressure, and temperature gages along with the procedures for each one. The tests use two 1.5V batteries in series to create a 3V source. You can use any old power supply that can be set to 3V.
