I am driving a 1974 F100 with a 360 V8.
About 2 weeks ago the upper hose clamp came loose and the hose popped off when I was running an errand. I checked the hose it was fine, so I put it back on and efiiled the radiator.
Everything was fine until today. This morning between errands I notice some water under my truck (less than a quart). I checked the truck out, this time the lower hose was loose. I tightened it. The screw only took 2 turns. The leak stopped.
Anyone have any idea why this keeps happening? The hoses appear fine, the truck isn't over heating.
As the hoses age they shrink and the clamp loosens. Also the cooler temperatures in Fall tend to shrink the hoses too. Just go around the check the other hose clamps and you shouldn't have any other problems.
Also, two laps around the hose on the clamping area with friction tape (the old-fashioned electrical black fabric stuff) allows the clamp to seal much more evenly and prevents the cutting and binding you see so much under a worm-style clamp.
The rubber underneath shrinks-engineers call it "cold flowing". There are new type of clamps out that automatically get tighter to prevent loosening but you need a special tool to put them on( Snap-On has it for sure). The clamps are like a wide steel bands-very stout-grip like a gorilla.
