But i just realized I have no idea how a ratchet shifter work? how do u shift while your driving,im thinking about getting one for my manual transmission cause i heard some good stuff about them, but i have no idea how it works! Any info would be great! Thanks in advance
It's a shifter for an automatic, where when manually shifting you can only go one gear at a time, designed for drag racing so you don't miss a shift and hit neutral or reverse.
The Pro Stock cars use "Liberty" manual transmissions........each gear has it's own lever to slam when the time comes. I don't believe they downshift very well(no synchros??) and I've never seen one run on the street.

I'm sure there are different types of drag racing manaul transmissions but the one I've heard about is made by Lenco.
It has 1 lever per gear, no syncros and you don't have to clutch to shift. The transmission is a series of planetary gears. Final drive is 1:1 and each gearset reduces the ratio. As you shift, you are engaging a clutch pack that causes the planetary assembly to lock up to a 1:1 arrangement. Once you've locked up all the planetaries, your in final drive and the trans is essentially a straight shaft through to the drive shaft. I have no idea if you can down shift this trans. Don't see why you couldn't.
