390 Cam Recommendation?

Wondering what would be a good cam for a stock 1973 2bl 390. Is there something that will help power/fuel economy? That won’t require replacing the rockers? I’m just guessing that what’s in there is not the best due to emission requirements, am I wrong? Should I just leave it alone?

TIA.

Is this a truck 390, or car 390?

I see. In that case, Crane 343901 cam. New lifters. Summit part number MRG-1132 head gaskets to put you back to a stock compression ratio, since someone probably put the thick Fel-Pro's in it at some point.

Be sure to check your lifter preload on each lifter. If it's not right, you're going to break things.

You'd be better off to put a 4 barrel intake on it, a holley 600cfm vacuum secondary carburetor, and headers on it first. Then mess with the cam.

Thanks for the info Rusty.
I plan to go the 4 barrel route in the near future, but right now I just want to get this engine in the truck. It's fully assembled and ready to drop in, but I just wanted to see if sticking a cam in it first would wake it up a little.
I may just drop it in the way it is and rebuild the 360 into a 390 for later. We'll see what the back and the wallet allow.

Out of curiosity, what would be the compression bump going from Fel-Pro's to those Mr. Gaskets you suggested.

Crap, I mean good, but crap, now I have to tear back into it and replace them. compression bump for only $20 seems reasonable to me.

Not to mention you take .021" off the quench distance!

Oh, and be sure to coat 'em with copper seal so they seal up good. They're not like the Fel-pro's where you can just slap 'em on dry.

the quench is the real gain in this equation.... it'll do wonders to help reduce your chance of detonation. JMO

Im trying to talk myself out of doing this and you guys aren't helping any . I'll have to wait to install them until after my next dyno run. We'll get some real numbers then.

woah there.... I just got it back together from a failed oilpump incident on the highway. Drove 32 miles without oil, ate itself alive, but it still ran!!!!. Im still trying to save up for some real heads, the C8AE's just don't flow well with my Comp 262ex. Then on comes a performer RPM to breath.

The C8AE heads are supposed to be as good as the Edel heads if you do steps like put the larger CJ exhaust valves in and pocket port the exhaust port to fit the new valve seat size.
