4.2 coolant leak Hard to find

I have 1997 4.2 in an econoline and the coolant is leaking. I added die to the coolant and it is running down the front of the engine on the passenger side. The water pump is NOT leaking or the thermostat housing. All the hoses and fittings seem to be in good shape the frost plug is also not leaking. I cant find anny die up on top of the engine, I can only find it running down from under the alt to the oil pan. Is there something behind the accesories that could be leaking?

It is most likely from your timing cover, and you are lucky it's leaking outward. If it were to leak inward, it would contaminate your oil, and unless you just happen to check it, probably spin a bearing in the process.

Ditto the above. Sounds like timing chain cover is leaking and the coolant running down where youy can see it.

FWIW - I do believe the water pump has a weep hole but am not certain. Something to check JIK.

Thanks for the info. I took another look at it this morning and it is the timing cover., Look like a bigger job than I anticipated.

Hi Gearheadz, I just went through this with my 97 F-150. If you search my username, you will find a good number of posts with suggestions and what I encountered.
