7.3 wont start!

Alright well a friend of mine has a 97 powerstroke and he parked it in my lot for 2 days.. then yesterday we put new glow plugs in it and went to start it up, and nothing. smoke came out the exhaust like the first two cranks now nothing. the plugs to the valve covers are getting power. there is fuel in the bowl deal. and the leads to the glow plugs are getting power. the glow plug solenoid is getting power as well. but we cannot figure out why the injectors are not working. that what we think the problem is. we also replaced the CPS just incase. it ran fine before the glow plugs. all fuses are ok , swaped around the relays and ones from out buddies 02 powerstroke and nothing. not sure what do to now.

check the batteries. Also you can try to put back pressure on the exhast. If you cover up the tail pipe with a rag or somthing and hold pressure on it, The exhast will heat the combution chamber and help it to start. That will work if the problem is with the glow plugs. Just hold the pressure on it while cranking (be sure you do not let exhast go out the tailpipe) hold it on there while cranking for 4 to 5 sec, then let the pressure off (while still craking) and that should make it fire off. hope this helps. yea someone just asked about the batteries.. they are getting down there after two days of cranking and nothing.. were gonna charge them tomorrow, a guy also said that it wont trigger the injector pressure regulator if the batteries are under 10volts.. so we'll see if that helps

we have some F550's here that have a reset switch in the cab, but I think it was an afftermarket thing the army had installed. Ours in just behing the kick pannel on the passenger side. Check there see if you have one. If you are not getting fuel. is the pump working? Can you here it come on with the key? if you crack a injector line while cranking dose fuel come out? Let me know, and I will see if I can help. GL

I dont think you will hear it working since its a mechanical fuel pump and it only works with a cranking engine. about the reset if its mechanical i dont know if it would even have a reset. I just dont think we are getting power to the injectors at all. even after testing the all the harness clips with a test light. i was told they might be fried or somthing. so were gonna check that out tomorrow

I had a friend who's diesel had a bad Cam sensor and it acted just like a fuel problem. If your not 100% sure of the No Fuel problem you may want to check this? I'm told it's in the front of the block off center to the left.
Good Luck

he already relaced the cps. are you still getting a wait to start light? how cold has it been there i would suspect a gelled fuel filter if its cold enough.

make sure it has plenty of oil.... if the HPOP isn't full while cranking it wont allow the truck to fire off, kind of a safety. i had this problem about 6 months ago. added some oil and it cranked like brand new. had the same white smoke at first and then nothing symptoms

Just another tip to eliminate fuel delivery....... soak a rag with gasoline and wring out and hold it in front of the air intake.
Works well after opening up the injection system and alot easier on the system than starting fluid (you better unplug the GPR if you monkey with ether!) to get it primed.

I seem to be having the same problem, except the truck starts, runs fine for fifteen minutes or so, starts sputtering and dies. Sometimes it restarts other times it won't. Changed Camp sensor. Should we see a full fuel filter housing when opening the cover? Mine is down about an inch after it stalls. Should we see fuel pressure at the shrader valve when just cranking the engine over? It's very intermitten and very frustraing...towed it twice last week.

appreciate the advice
