I need to know how to remove the plastic cover off the ignition on the steering colume of a 2000 F250 7.3 4x4. The signal lights only work when the wheel is tilted all the way up. If you tilt it down the turn signal will not work. I want to check the colume to see if the wires are broken or if there is a loose connection.
Look up at the lower half from below. Note a small hole. Remember it's approximate location because you're going to do something at that location once you lower the bottom half of the plastic collar.
I believe there's three screws that come up through the bottom half into the top half. Take these out. Drop the lower cover away. In the location of that small hole, you can now see a small button to depress. Turn the key to the "ON" (not START) position. Depress that button using a nail or whatever's handy, and pull the key straight out. The cylinder mechanism will come out with the key.
"Finesse" the top cover off. If you're concerned about the dinging of the key reminder, put the cylinder straight back in and turn the key to "OFF" or "LOCK" and remove it.
While you're in there, find the small wire that comes from the switch at the end of the gear selector lever. Look for any sign of insulation abrasion, as it's a common problem. Correct it with electrical tape or similar. I like to use Scotch 33+ tape after I have cleaned the surfaces thoroughly with alcohol.

Depening on you likes now would be a good time to get rid of the key chime, believe it is a black wire with pink stripe. You can either remove the switch that senses the key in place or you can cut wire tape it off and be done with it. Nice to be able to have the door open while in acc postion and not have the thing constantly yelling at you. Again all depends of preference. The lights on reminder will not be affected by this and the Key fob still wont work when the truck is on. All that is gained is the chiming will be gone when the key is in the ignition.
