I have a 69 460 with internal power steering (crank driven) is this good, bad or shouldn't have messed with this motor at all ?
I plan to rebuild it, so can the power steering pump be removed or just plugged off maybe?
Or do they work fine and could it be used for my sons 1964 F-350 4x4, it already has the power steering gear converted into it from before, we are just looking to upgrade the 429 in it now.
I do not understand "internal power steering"? Do you not have a belt driven power steering pump? 460 is a great motor and you can build it without the power steering pump if you prefer. The Ford pump should work with whatever you used to convert the truck in the first place. A 460 and 429 are the same engine except for stroke so all your current components should swap over.
William: Some early Lincolns with 385s came with a power steering pump mounted under the water pump, behind the harmonic balancer, and was driven directly by the crankshaft. I haven't seen one in years, but that is how I remember it.
I do not know how reliable they are, or if it can be easily removed without tearing the engine apart.
I would replace the thing with a later PS pump and timing cover or whatever parts I needed off a later engine to put it to a later stock truck engine configuration.
I recommend this only because the later pumps and parts are more easily available for repair and replacement.

Yes the early Lincoln 460s had the pump mounted on the front of the block and turned by the crank. They are pretty reliable. I had one last a long time on a 69 Mark III. For replacements or parts Baker's Auto in Putnam, CT is a good outlet.
