I have read hundreds of threads covering guages. My question is (and I know everybody has a favorite) what are the best guages for the money?
I think most of the gauges on the market will do the job. I just ordered a set os ISSPRO gauges from Diesel Manor, they match factory gauges very well. I think by the time you get three gauges and pod, paint, etc., you are generally looking at $300-$350 range.
pyrometer, that is the name of the thing that detects exhaust temp. my Edge Attitude has the digital readout on the EGT. i feel it is more accurate becuase it can get within +/-2* of the actual temp. there are pics of the monitor and the install location in my gallery. however, since my edge doesnt read true MAP and transmission temps, i am going to get a A-pillar set soon with engine coolant temp, tranny temp, and MAP. (manifold absolute pressure) Autometer makes the best gauges IMO, but DiProcol makes good gauges too.
Then why do people do BOTH?(Do I need Pre & Post ) for a more accurate reading?
IMO for bragging rights.
I bought Isspro because they are the only one that offers the colorbanded display. It's very easy to see out of the corner of your eye whether you are ok or not.
some want to see what temperatures the engine itself is at, and what the turbo vanes are actually seeing. there can be up to a 300* difference between the manifold and downpipe. the turbo uses heat energy to spin the vanes. the post-turbo isnt essential. the vanes are tungsten alloy, that melt around 2200*. impossible (almost) to get that post-turbo without making a pool molten metal under the hood. the engine's pistons are aluminum, and melt around 1250*. of course they don't begin to melt at 1250* EGT, because of cooling such as air and liquid cooling.
OK I understand the PYRO Guage(Pre-Turbo best) but what about Trans TEMP, BOOST,Oil Pressure,Engine Temp,Rear End Temp, etc, etc. How do yall PSD owners set up your trucks? Do I need 6 guages to moniter my truck and not miss anything.

The color bands were a deciding factor for me also. Like Kwikk, I wanted to see at a glance. I'm sure I could do without, just thought it was a nice touch.

Most have pyro, trans., and boost, but more gauges never hurt.
Wow, IMO, anything over 4 gauges is overkill, and the 3 that I do have are already alot to look at.
I went with pyro (post, wasn't thinking at the time as I installed my exhaust the same time as my guages and since I had the dp off it seemed like the smart thing to do at the time), tranny, and boost. I chose the Autometer ultra-lites as they match my stock gauge cluster and are easy to read at a glance.
Well as posted prior many times, depends on what you like, I personally like the white faced gauges and am hoping to get a dash kit for christmas for the main instrument cluster. As the number of gauges go, it all depends on what you want, I think most will agree that the EGTs are most important. I went with a Quad pillar simply because I have a couple of extra batteries for the camper under the bed. Pics are in gallery. I ordered mine from egauges they have about every type of gauge and mounting option, go all mine for 315 delivered to the door. However, they are not a sponsor to my knowledge so you might want to check our sponsors first.
i have been very happy with the Dipricol gauges i got from blackclouddiesel.com... they matched up very well with my stock gauges with no modifications needed and they look great, lots of compliments, and they work very well...
