My 8th grade science teacher, Mr. Collins, who was undoubtedly one of the best teachers Neshaminy Jr. High school ever had, taught us about orienteering back in 1976. He took us into the woods, and fields, and we followed the maps as we raced from marker to marker.
As I recall, it was a real challenge for a 13 or 14 year old to figure out what the heck to do! It was hard work, and it took alot of thinking to get thru the course.
I'll never forget that experience, I can still recall being lost half the time, and we luckily stumbled upon half the markers, otherwise we would have failed the test.
i learned about orienterring(sp) 5 yrs ago at this camp in upstate nh its a great skill to have when you go camping. i haven't been in yrs but whne i did it was blast to make your own short cut to other trails through the woods of NH and Maine i think its something that should be learned if you are going to be back packing through a national park
