I have built a 1950 truck using a 1984 Ranger as the main donor (chassis, rebuilt motor, all harnesses, steering, etc.) I have also figured out how to get the original bezels to work with the Ranger guages.
I would like to set the odometer to 000000 and it is driving me nuts trying to figure it out.
This is a frame-off Franken-rod, so Johnny law can't have anything to say about the numbers when it's registered. Already checked with DMV and they ok'd it for me.
Any advice would be appreciated. It is currently at 219,000, so it would take months with a power drill to spin it forward or back to 0 - not an option.
I don't know of a way other than the drill method to spin it back to 000000. I know the gear ratio is like 1200 to 1, so yeah you'll be there forever. Might just want to get a new tach if that's what holds it, would definetly be easier.
I've "heard" of a way to do it but since it's something that could be used for illegal purposes not too many people are willing to put the information on the 'net.
Running it backwards with a drill won't work, most odometers only run forward.
I've done this on a early 80's chevy odometer before. You have to carefully unscrew the assembly from the gauge face and remove a small clip that hold the odometer roll in place. Be careful not to snap off the needle. Once you get the odometer roll out remove the plastic thing on there that holds all the metal tabs lined up. Then what you do is hold the metal tabs and spin the gear till you get the first digit too 0. Then you hold only the other five tabs and spin the first digit by the metal tab around untill the second digit is on 0 and the metal tabs line up. And you just keep doing the same untill you have all of them at zero and the metal tabs line up. Remember that you are not rolling it back but actually all the way around till it is at zero again. It's a little tricky just be carefull not to break anything.
It's only illegal to change the odometer reading for fraud porposes. I didn't put mine at zero but changed the one on my truck because i had to replace the speedometer and i didn't want to commit fraud, i wanted the odometer reading to match. On older cars it's not a big deal to set them at zero since most restored cars get digital dashes or replacement gauges that are either at zero or the wrong milege anyways.
