Trying to help my dad fix the power door locks on his 1999 Ford F150. When you push the power door lock button it trys to lock/unlock, gives a cug, but not enough umpha to get the door locks to open/close.
Any ideas about the problem, relay or fuse or something? The truck has only 74,000 miles.
A Ford dealer told him it would cost $800 to repair, but gave no details. ( I can only assume the dealer was going to replace most of the parts, etc)
Dad is retired and the dealer option is out, even if I were to pay for it he said no.
Thats a tough one, I would take the door panel off and see if there is any restriction causing the door not to lock and unlock. is it both doors or just the drivers door.
The most common cause of that problem is that the door lock actuators are weak and will have to be replaced.
There are instructions to do that in the FAQs at the top of the forum.
Both doors went at the same time, that is what makes me think it can't be the actuators, it would be to concidential. Somewhere I read there is a Thermo Switch on the wiring harness, who's job is to stop multiple lock/unlocks from a depressed keyless entry remote. I may try replacing that part, if the Ford dealers would have one in stock.

Appreciate any help or advise..... Jim
My 2000 f150 does Exactly the same thing. The locks both started going out at the same time. The thing is that they work for one or two up and downs then they start to fail and after several tries they just make a faint clicking. It's like the power starts to weaken. This been happening for a few months now. I wonder if there is a high voltage capasitor in line or something like that?

hate to mention it, BUT
every time to hit the lock or unlock button, you lock or unlock both doors. so, if they were defective from the factory, chances are that they will wear out at the same time.
I would personally want to check the voltage at the actuator. If you have a corroded power wire or a short, it will let you know. You could also check the resistance of the actuator and compare it to a new one. If it has a good deal more resistance, it might not be able to draw enough current to trigger the locks. electricity is a fun thing to troubleshoot when everything is hidden behind a panel..
you most likely have bad door lock actuators. i run into this all the time. dont think its strange to have 2 fail at the same time, i have had more than one excursion have 4 failed ones. the actuators are all worked pretty hard considering the size of its motor. but just to be entirely certain, unplug one actuator and see if the other responds favorably. an actuator with high resistance can pull more than its share of current and consequently weaken the others....just my .02
I have the same problem. My driver side one work every now and then but the passenger one is shot. A friend of mine changed the sctuators in his and it worked fine. I just haven't had the time or money to do mine yet.
Mine does the almost the same thing, but I do not think the actuators are the problem. My door lock switches cause the locks to make noise and attempt to move as the other cases, but when I put the truck in drive and take off down the road the locks move to the lock position and then unlock when I stop and go to park position. If the actuators were bad wouldn't they fail to work in all instances? I was wondering about the drivers lock relay or all lock relay mentioned in my Chiltons going bad. I can't find the relays listed in the owners manual and I thought they would be in the power distribution box. Could it still be the actuators?? Help? Just bought the truck a month ago.
On your truck the driver's door has it's own unlock relay but it also has the all unlock relay. There is also the all lock relay.
Since there would have to be 3 bad relays for your problem to happen I think it's probably safe to say that the relays aren't the cause.
I believe that the lock relays are molded into a relay block and can't be replaced seperately on your truck.
It doesn't really make sense that the locks work when you're driving but I've replaced enough actuators to think they probably are the problem.
Finally got around to replacing them and as much as I hate to admit it, the symptoms did not indicate that the actuators were the problem, BUT THEY WERE. Now if only I could get the remote entry to program. I hear clicking in the doors but the locks never move unless I hit the door switch. Any ideas?
