I'm no expert on the subject, but I know that the Ford has a stronger bottom end, and that the internals are superior as well. I could care less if there was more aftermarket availability, it certainly doesn't make the engine any better. It makes me mad when people throw SBC into every hot rod just because of the availability of parts.
I think the fact that 600hp out of a 460 isn't even straining it, really speaks wonders of the engine itself. I've seen 460's go for a long, long time on regular maintenace, under heavy use, and poor winter conditions.

I don't know if I would say the 460 has a stronger bottom end than a 454. They are both very strong. 4 bolt main cap Lima's are rare, and if memory serves me correctly, only 2,3, and 4 caps have 4 bolts, the ends still have 2. Most 454's have 4 bolt mains (all of them). The 454 has a better oiling system, with full pressure straight from the pump to the mains and the rods. The Lima's rely on the Cleveland system, where the mains and rods are feed intermittantly from the cam bearings. Fine for a street engine, but the first thing to modify when biulding a race engine. Like the above post said, the advantage the 460 has over the 454 is symetrical port heads. So, I think you have 2 very evenly matched engines, with the 454 having a better lubrication system and the 460 having better intake ports. Beyond that, all you can say is that there are more parts available cheaper for the 454.

I would gladly have spent a tad more........how much, I don't know.....to have Ford power in my boat. But try and find me a 4 bolt main, 502 cube, all forged internals (the 502 was based on the ooold LS6 454) that would bolt up to Mercruiser's Bravo drive. I had 425 propshaft HP from a stock warrantied setup. Adding dual 750's, a B&M supercharger, headers etc...required 0 upgrades internally.

The OMC 460 Fords of the day were the same as the base 454's (around 330 HP) and there was nowhere to go from there. No forged internals, no 4 bolt mains, would have had to modify the oiling sytem to live at 5500 constant RPM etc.... Could I do it? YES!! Am I that blinded by Ford loyalty? NO!!!!

I was looking up performance parts for my truck a 92 f250 with a 460 and i read that the bottom end of those motors could handle 600 hp abuse right from the factory. It seems like it is harder to find windsor big block performance parts compared to all of the chevy big blocks. So if you are lookin to spend less then the 454 is the way to go. If you are lookin for probably better performance at a higher cost then the 450 would do it.

As far as boat motors go, the chevy and olds were always more popular for only one reason. They would run better at low water temps. If you had an offshore boat with a radiator,it was anyones guess.

I don't know about all that...

Different gearing, perhaps?

454 is a strong motor. I've seen them in BIG moving trucks. I'm not saying the 454 is better than the 460. I'm a huge fan of the 460. I always wanted a 460 in my truck. I'm just saying; 454 = lots of power.

I drove commercially a truck with a 460 for q00's of 1000's of miles, back in the '70's. We never had a problem with it, except for it's thirst.

Brawny....a torquemeister , I'm a fan of the 460 Ford.

Chevy big block...my father bought a new '69 Impala, 4 door hard top, with the 396 big block Chevy V8. He towed a 24 foot trailer with it. It had the THM 400 transmission, 12 bolt axle...it was heavy duty.

Same thing as the 460...that 396 Chevy had loads of torque and power, never gave a moment's trouble and excelled at towing heavy loads.

Both the 460 and 396/427/454/496 Chevy BB are great engines...stock. Probably as close to equal as you will find.

But if you want to hot rod them...there's more Chevy BB parts @ a cheaper price (volume) then a Ford 460 BB.

Both engines have great potential as racers, it's just for some reason the Chevy BB was more popular with the racers and hot rodders.

Because Chebbie is more popular in general. That's all anyone drives. People like Glenn Beck and Rush Lumpburger (ha ha ) just brag up GM. To drive a Chebbie is more of a Fad. All the young people drive them.

I have a real soft spot in my heart for Ford and I'm fericiely proud of my baby so I find this hard to believe, but more people go for GM than Ford. I think it's mainly a fad.

I know one GMC I would buy in a heartbeat if I had the money. Man that truck is sweet. I'm not against any brand, I like them all. I'm just saying.
