I have a '99 mustang with a 4.6 and need help getting it timed properly. I put a post on a mustang site and couldn't get any help so I though Id try here. I had to rebuild the bottom end due to the previous owner not liking to change or check the oil. I had it set on TDC, but before I pulled it apart my Dad looked at the engine and turned the crank. When I pulled it apart I didn't pay attention that it was off of TDC, so now I don't know what to do. Any information on timing this thing would be great.
Thanks,
Joe
There are specific timing marks on the cam gears and the crank trigger. You need to line them up properly, so lie krewat said, you will need to take everything apart again, and put the no1 cylinder at tdc, and start over. You should get a haynes manual while your doing this. They have a picture that shows exactly where the marks are supposed to be. Good Luck!! Remember, if you put everything back together, and the power seems sluggish, that means the cams are still not timed correctly. The engine will still start and run, and usually will not give a check engine light because the ecu will adapt to the changes. Do it right the first time. After you get the cams where you want them, crank the engine around 2 times and see if the cams line back up.
These are very picky. You have to make sure you get it correct or the valves may hit the pistons. There is a mark on the timeing chain cover for TDC. Line it up, then take it apart. Make sure you get the camshaft marks correct. You may have to hold the cam in place when you put the chain on it. Also make sure you line up the "flat" link on the marks on both the cam and crank sprocket.
One thing you can do is get a new set of chains. They will have the highlited links. Two of the highlited links will match up at the bottom of the crank, and the other 2 will match individaully with the cam gears, the passenger side in roughly the 10:30 position, and the driver side in roughly the 1:30 position. Just make sure your car is at TDC
