This is my first post and I was wondering if you folks could help out with a very odd problem. I have a 2001 F150, with a 4.6, that is bucking, jerking, the works. I changed plugs, didn't help. I changed the fuel filter, didn't help. I ran a diagnostic and got code P0401. With the help of this forum I learned that this usually means the EGR valve or the DPFE sensor. I went to O'Reilly's and bought both. I swapped out the EGR and then went to replace the DPFE and couldn't find it. I got out my Chilton and Haynes books to find out where the DPFE was located. I downloaded photos of the location from the Net and even found the brackets that hold it in place...but there is NO DPFE on my truck???? Did Ford ever make a 4.6 with no DPFE? By the way, just replacing the EGR valve was no help at all. Any suggestions?
I'm not sure, but the only engines that don't have a dpfe sensor is the an engine that has an electric egr valve.(stepper motor egr)
The egr that you put in did it have electrical connections instead of vacuum lines?
I found the missing DPFE...sort of. Even though the 4.6 has brackets for it and all the books call for it, it doesn't go. Apparently Ford changed over to a smaller, plastic, elctric version mid-year in 2001. So even though the vacuum version is called for, and actually fits the truck, it's the wrong one.
77F250Diesel, thanks for the advice! A friend of mine suggested the same thing yesterday. I remembered several months getting a code of "cylinder 7 misfire", but it only showed that once. Just for kicks, I replaced the coil on the #7 plug and problem solved!
Just went through the search for it too. Called a buddy that works at a dealership and found out the the sensor is a little black box (by the way I have a 2002 f150 supercrew 4.6l) that is connected to the metal hose that runs from the EGR to the manifold about halfway down. It has 2 hoses off of it and 1 electical connector. About $30.00 for the part. My Haynes manual showed the other 1 that is mentioned in the previos posts. By the way I had code P0405. Hope this fixes it!!
