Anybody with an opinion on the Cooper discoverer ATR's. How's the ride, noise level, durability, traction, etc.
I'm used to a more agressive A/T, but I get this thing off road so rarely I don't need it...and they wear out every 30,000.
So other than the Coopers what wears well that still has a decent A/T tread pattern? Pure street tires look silly on a 4x4, so keep it A/T's if you can.
I have the Dominator A/T which is Discount Tires private label tire made by Cooper, basicaly it's the Discoverer A/T. I have 35,000 miles on them and should get at least another 10,000 out of them. I have them rotated every 5,000 miles & they have worn very evenly. They are more quiet on the highway than the BFG A/T but are not as good off road & in the mud. I got them for $50 less a tire than the BFG A/T so I'm pleased with the purchase. However, when these wear out I will probably get the Toyo Open Country A/T which I can get for $5 a tire more than the Dominators.
I've had the Cooper A/T's (265s) on since 39k and I just rolled 62k the other morning and I'd say they're at about 50%, maybe a bit less. Like 200 said, I rotate every 5000 and they're wearing even. They've gotten me out of anything I've put the truck into (mud and snow) I'd also look into the Toyos as they seem to be the popular tire at the moment, but I wouldn't hesitate to put another set of these cooper's on.
i have BFG AT KO's on my ram 2500. 37/12.50/17's. i have about 40000 and i just measures the tread last week, 8/32" on all tires. i am very pleased and when i bought them, they came with an hard to be true warranty, if you get stuck, anywhere, off road or on road, BFG would pay for the tow. i have it in writing. i dont no weather they still have this, but i am a permanent BFG customer. and also very highway quiet. almost no noise..i haven't had any trials with the cooper, and i know that is what you asked for, sorry. on the down side for the BFG, they are kind of $$$$....
I was a Goodyear Wrangler ATS fan since I picked up my first SuperDuty in March of 1998. Then I got TIREd (pun ) of only 40k miles and the big $$$. Got turned on to the Toyo's by the local "hardcore" Jeep guys ($50k Wranglers with add-ons ) and have been very impressed. Excellent, quiet ride (as good as the GY's), much easier to balance, and much cheaper. They are supposed to be rated for 50k miles but the Jeep guys say it's closer to 60k. Tread pattern is the same basic style as the Goodyear's. Anyway, I'm a believer.
I have the Cooper ATR's on my truck (285's). I run them at 60 psi and so far I think they are great.
Great ride on the highway ....smooth, and no noise that I can hear. They have been on for about 2000 miles so I can't really tell you much about the wear, but I do rotate every other oil change. Traction so far has been great, I will let you know what happens when I start plowing this year, and they channel water alot better than them stock firestones I just took off.
Toyos here too. Great tire. Smooth and quiet with great traction. 12k and still look like new. They balance easy and the ride is better than the stock BFGs. Excellent wet weather traction. Mine are 285/70/17s.
I'll look into the Toyo's too before I decide, though I like that the Cooper plant is right down the road in NE Texas. I've always been a huge BFG fan as far as traction and appearance, but I've never managed to get the kind of milage that other folks seem to...and size for size only the Michelin's are more expensive, so I really can't afford to run BFG's anymore.
I here people talking about getting only 40K out of there tires here, and I only wish I could get that. I have never even come close to getting even 20K on a set of any tire, cheap or expensive. Heck, my stock generals have significant wear at about 6000 miles on the set(been rotated twice). My truck runs procomp xterrains summer and stockers winter. Only have 11k on the truck, and boths sets have a decent amount of wear.

I Think They Will Probably Dry Rot Before I Wear The Tread Out. As Far As Traction, I've Been In Lots Of -----deeeeep------ Mud And Never Got Stuck. But I Am Hard On The Throttle. I Also Have Lockers, 5.13 Gears And A 5 Speed In My Ram 2500.thats Probably Why I Don't Get Stuck. I Also Do Alot Of Wheelin And I Know How To Drive Well On And Off Road..
I agree with most that the BFG A/T's are expensive, but so are the Toyo A/T's. At least compared to other less expensive tires..JMO. If anyone can tell me where to get a set of Toyo A/T's that are NOT expensive...please let me know (pm me if needed).
I've run the BFG A/T's for over 10 years with NO problems. They have really good wear for a truck tire. The off-road side of the tire is excellent.
Back to your original question: I do not have direct experience, but am looking for another set of tires...and may go with the Cooper, Nitto, Dunlop, Toyo, etc. Looking forward to the rest of this thread...and the other experience's from the other members.
biz, I was quoted $155 a tire mounted & balanced for the Toyo A/T in a 295/75/16. Check Toyo's website for a list of dealers in your area and start calling around for the best price. I was quoted anywhere from $155 a tire to almost $200 a tire.

Wow...That is a GREAT deal! I just got off the phone and was quoted $797.00 for a set of 4 mounted and balanced...without the road plan. Price is high here in the Southwest...ABQ area.
Went for option c, which was none of the above. Bought a set of Dunlop Rover RV's today in a 315/75-16. Tread pattern is similar to a M/T Baja MTX. So far I'm impressed, they ride better and are a good bit quieter than the 285 sport kings I had on there.
