summit lists a head gasket by ford racing that is .040 with a 4.23 bore as opposed to the .041 and 4.4 bore of the fel-pros... if your opposed to the .020 steel shim route that may be a little better solution, its about a half a cc less if you wanna get down to the nitty gritty... :-)

milling the haeds will make it worse. A set of gaskets is cheaper and easier.

i don't think just reducing the combustion area is going to help with anything. Got to get back to the .040 quench area.

Here's the gaskets I've currently got in my 390:

Mr. Gasket .020" steel shim head gaskets. $20.69 from Summit, #MRG-1132. Spray coat 'em with Copper seal, torque 'em down, away you go. These and L2291 pistons, in my motor anyway, give .032" quench.

You have to watch ever so closly when your dealing with cam lift at the valve and Piston to head clearence....alot of guys make the mistake of running a High lift cam that good for say 6500rpm as advertised...but thay dont have the Piston to valve clearence and smack the pistons into the Valve's ..and say hell the manufacturer said the cam was good to 6500rpm.. Yes right with proper Clearence!!

nothing gets as much question or goofy looks as the colored clay in one of my toolbox's, cause everyone knows one box isn't enough.

IIRC, this was a couple years ago when I had my heads CC'd, it was 74 before I polished them. Probably 76 by the time they went into the motor.

My 428 has the forged piston .005" down the bore, Victor head gaskets(stock replacement type) and has a measured 10.04:1 CR. I have VERY little pinging except under heavy pulls and low RPM. I think the quench is critical as Kurt has been preaching for some time!
