Is your tranny shifting right, You might want to check the vacuum lines coming from your transmission, that will keep it from shifting properlly sometimes
Your gonna have to drive it and listen for the shifts. There is a modulator on the back of the trans that a vac. hose goes to. Make sure that hose isn't crimped or blocked. You may also wanna check about changing it out and/or the modulator. But your saying that the motor sounds like its turning 5000 when the tach reads 5000? Cause 5000 rpm at highway is screaming. Had a '79 mustang that was turning 4,000 at 70mph and I'd always be half deaf when I got outta the car after a highway run. Of course no interior and a 460 w/c6 didn't help any.
Sounds like the tranny may be staying in second gear, check and make sure when you put the fear selector in D, and drive that the tranny actually shifts into drive on the road. Other than that, check what Spaznaut says, modulator and vacumn hose to it. I think I read somewhere that the modulators can also be adjusted, but I'll have to check my books to be sure
