My 9" rear end needs to be rebuilt. I have alot of backlash, and it clunks when i acclerate and decellerate. But what I want to know is, what would happen if I left it as it is, and took in on a 1500 mile each way trip? How bad could it get. I only have about 2 weeks before I leave, and I would really like to take my truck. I have a good video now on how to rebuild it, but it would probably take awhile to gather the parts and tools.
No it probably won't really explode people have driven vehicles with massive amounts of backlash for years totally oblivious to it, but now it's something you have found out about, and it will probably make your head explode worrying about it.
One nice thing about the 9" is that you could pull it, and adjust the backlash tighter without a total rebuild. This might put some wear on the gears but if your gonna rebuild it anyway not a big thing I guess.
Also why would it take a long time to gather the parts, Napa or any other parts store should be able to get the setup kit which will have new bearings, and seals and pinion shims and it really isn't that hard to do. If you ordered the parts monday you could have them by mid week, and have next saterday to work on it. Even a first time you should be able to get er done pretty quick.
Thats true.. Ever since I found out what the clunking was, i've been worried about the rear going out everytime I go anywhere. I've managed to ease my worries by figuring out a way to drive it so that I can't feel the clunk.
I had been looking at all the rebuild parts , and just figured that in order to get all the right parts, and get the clutch setup too if its bad, it would take awhile. I dunno, I guess I just assumed. But we all know what assuming does......
I looked at different differential kits on the internet, but I am unsure of the correct size bearings. I guess the only way to know what size I had would be to take it all apart.? This is one auction that I found on ebay: 8012423285 . It would probably be better if I just got them through schucks for like $134.00.
I had a guy bring me a kit that he bought off of that guy in the auction, and it's a good kit, good enough infact that the next time I am going to do mine I will order it through him and his prices are god too. I guess it helps though that he is only 90 miles from me so if I had to I could drive up there, and pick it up.
But if it's means anything to you the guy is pretty good to work with, and honest from the dealings I and others I know have had with him.
edit: I hate to even add this but the odds are that the diff has the 2.89" bearings, hated to add that cause now yours will have the bigger ones just to make me look bad.

He seems like a good guy. I looked at his feedback, and he doesn't have any negatives. And shipping is only $10 i think, so its still alot less than buying from other places. I think I may end up going for a short term fix (leaving it alone) then doing it later.
another option for you would be go to a junk yard, and find another drop out 9" chunk, and put it in there. They aren't to hard to just swap out, and hten you could rebuild yours in your own time, and swap back later. Just make sure to get one from another pickup so you get a 31 spline unit.
I would still look.. just for fun... But along with just swapping out the third member, what about the shims? Will there be a change in that, or will that not matter becasue I am swapping out the whole thing?
Oh and i just thought of something else... I currently have a limited slip rear. Will i have problems with that, as far as getting another one. Or will I end up going without.
Most likely your gonna end up with an open diff, but it will make hte trip you want to make, and allow you to properly rebuild your diff.
The only shims in a 9" are the pinion depth shims behind the pinion support, and they will come with the chunk and won't need changed.
Also unless someone changed it most of the N case unit are in things lke mustangs, and those will have 28 spline so won't work in your truck without changing the carrier over thus negating the whole purpose of doing this at this time.
