The Modulator is generally very easy to replace. It would be on the side of the transmition and the only thing with a vacuum line going to it. When you pull the vacuum line off of it and ATF comes out of the line than we have found the problem. Ones I have done on 3 speed autos and the A4OD where all held in with on bolt holding a clamp. My last modulator cost me around $20.00. On the little 1990 Ranger I just did I had to cut a hole in the floor to get at it. Once there it took like 10 minutes to R&R (Remove and Replace). I do not think you have to cut out your floor on a full size rig. It should be very easy to get at.

I'm not a Marine, so forgive me...Semper Fi!

Anyway, step back for a moment and consider that the ATF is going somewhere!

It drove two hours (it didn't do that on zero fluid) and you keep pumping more into it. If it's not puddling on your driveway, it's going somewhere else. Where else can it possibly be going?

I had an E4OD, and hated it. I don't know about the diesel, but there should be a vacuum connector from the tranny to the engine. I'd certainly look for that.

I hear ya PaPa bear.....I only had this 3 days and I am only driving it around the block once or twice untill i figure it all out.....I have NO clue as to IF it was FULL of tranny fliud when the BOY left Riverview or NOT??? His father died,,,The truck sat up over 2 yrs and now I bought it.....IF...and only IF we determine the tranny is ACTUALLY BAD.....then IF i have to swap it out,,id rather swap it out for a 5 speed.....BUT...I DONT want to just throw GOOD money away IF the actual tranny is ok?????? BUT......again IF its BAD......Where do i look for a 5-speed MANUAL,,,,,Bell Housing....CLUTCH/pressureplate/throw-out bearing/Fork and 5 speed maunal PLUS BOTH the CLUCTCH PEDAL & Brake Pedal??? I know you are going to say JUNK YARD but i DONT want to but a tranny from a junk yard??? So for Now I am going to fill the tranny TOMORROW completely FULL and watch daily to see IF it in Facts keep DISAPPEARING then PULL OUT ALL MY HAIR...LOL

Yes look for a vacuum line on the tranny. Pull it off and if it has ATF in the line we will go from there. Like maybe get into the right forum for this so the guy's that know can see it and help. Wish I knew who that would as I would send them a PM and ask them to check in. Anyone know?

OK, I'm stupid. I just did a Google search for E4OD modulator, and found there is not one - the computer controls everything.

My guess - and yes, it's a guess - if there is no puddle, your tranny was just VERY low on fluid.

I still hate the E4OD...

NumberDummy had posted some part numbers for switching over to a manual transmission - it's a big job!

  • Clutch pedal
  • Hole in floor
  • Flywheel
  • Starter
  • Column shift
  • different brake pedal
  • different pedals shaft

I don't remember why the brake pedal was different, but mounting the standard tranny is the easy part.

No offense, but NumberDummy and others here are all about doing a job right, with the right parts, and to completion. If you choose to go a different route, we'll help you as best we can...
