My Escape CD4E trans. began shuddering (feels like driving over rumble strips) when shifting into OD (around 45mph) within 1,500 miles of a shop performing a trans. flush at 30,800 miles and putting MerconV in it. I have seen TSB 16717 wherein Ford says put Mercon in the trans. and TSB 16896 wherein Ford says "2001-2004 Escape use only 'Mercon' -- not 'Mercon V' or 'Mercon Synthetic' for the CD4E transmission." I have also read numerous horror stories in a number of forums regarding the shuddering and ultimate trans. failures attributed to the use of MerconV in the CD4E trans.
Question: Does anybody have documentation from any source, i.e. Ford Corp, Ford dealership, consumer agency, governmental agency, that states why MerconV should not be used in CD4E trans. and the damage it do to them if used? Ford must have released the above TSBs (especially 16896) based upon some specific data or engineering standards. I just cannot find any and need to get the shop to acknowledge that the CD4E problems I am experiencing, and failure I will ultimately experience, are due to their installation of the wrong fluid into my trans.
Does anyone have access to the complete TSB 16896 that they can share with me? I have obtained online what appears to be a 1-2 paragraph summary and am unsure if there is any more substance available.
Dude, if it says to use Mercon, use that. If it says to use Mercon V, use that. Don't use the dual-standard, and don't use the wrong one. I'd get back to that shop and make them switch it out.
Thanks for your advice Jason. I have every intention of taking it back to the Ford dealership's shop (since they put the MerconV in) and, despite their declarations that MerconV is the premium fluid for CD4E trans. (declarations I have already received from them), have them acknowledge their screwup and responsibility for the repairs of any/all resulting damages.
