runs odd when cold

I have been noticing the last couple of mornings that my truck runs a little odd the first time I drive it in the morning. It seems a lot noisier and just odd sounding. After I stop and shut it down and it sits for a few minutes it runs normal again. It hasn't really been that cold in the mornings either. Its not the EBPV because it was ordered with the cold weather package delete, which means no block heater, AIH, and EBPV. I run MotorCraft 15w-40 oil, change the fuel filter at every 3000 mile oil change, etc. so I'm lost as to what could be causing this. Any Ideas?

Is it doing it after it gets up to normal operating temp? This will take longer the colder it gets. It will be noisier until it gets to that point.

I agree on the filter. My fuel filter on our 04 is changed every 12K --- took it apart the first time and man was it full of stuff. especially the frame filter.

After it gets to normal operating range it will still do it until I shut the truck off and it sits for a few minutes and then its back to normal. I change the fuel filter every 3000 miles when I change the engine oil. I use the Napa Gold filters for both from fleetfilter.com.

diesels need heat to run properly, its a fact. if you run it without sufficient heat, it will not run right, it is only logical. it seems as if you need to let it warm up a little longer before taking off.

try switching to synthetic 5w-40 on your next change and see if that helps... i use the mobil 1 truck and suv stuff because it is diesel rated and my mule seems to like it the best from the oils i have tried... i was running some other stuff and i noticed my truck was a lot louder when it was cold... they do run a little loud when cold, but the 5w-40 helps...

The 15w40 should be fine in SC. I don't think that going to 5w40 will solve this issue in comparison to those of us that see much, much lower temps.

I can't help but wonder if its the dreaded camshaft sensor.

I was just saying to myself today that I am going to order a CPS and see if that isn't the culprit. I started the truck this afternoon at over 80* outside and it still did the same think. I shut it down after about 5 minutes and restarted it and it was fine after the restart. I have had the truck for 2 years and never experienced this behavior from it before and it has been in much colder temps. Thanks for the inputs, it gives me hope at least before going to the stealership.
