4 Barrel Carb Question

hi. i am just wondering how the holley 390 cfm 4 barrel carb performs in colder weather? my 84 ford has the stock 1 bbl, and its freezing up in somewhat cold weather due to my heat shield and my hot air ducting hose being worn off and torn off. if i were to get an offy intake and holley carb, would i have to buy/ make a heat shield so that carb does not freeze up? thanks for the input

Hey Mikedogg7, at your latitude you are going to need that hot air ducting no matter what carb you decide to run.

I don't pretend to be an expert here, but perhaps one of the water-heated Clifford intakes with a 4-barrel carb plate would be a better choice than an Offenhauser for a person living in Ontario.

My old 1bbl had a terrible time in cold weather. Of course, it was a manual choke which probably was not set up properly. Anyhow, with my Holley 390, I just pump the pedal once, the choke kicks in if necessary, and let her idle till she warms up. Of course, I have the Clifford water heated intake, so she warms up quicker than a Vegas 'lady of the night'!

Believe it or not, I want to ditch my efi for the offy intake/ Holley 390 combo, and my top concern was the cold weather startup. It gets down to about 0 degrees here in the coldest of winter. It doesn't really matter how quick it warms up since a give it a few minutes on those cold mornings to sit and idle.

Anyway, about how many cranks or seconds does it take to start with that combo?

It hasn't gotten all that cold here yet, never got under 30 so far and it starts up really good. But I have noticed that it misses a little at idle and when you first just hit the gas after taking your foot off the brake. Then again I'm not positive its the cold doing this, but it never did it when it was warm out. I'm going to make an enclosed air cleaner so it sucks warm air from under the carb by the exhaust and hope it helps when it gets to 20 below.

With my set-up, it doesn't take a second to start. I don't drive my truck every day, but I give her a shot by hitting the gas pedal once, then she fires right up. I'm in Alabama, it really doesn't get very cold here. If I let her warm up with the choke, she idles high until she's warm, then she starts to stumble a little bit. Then I hit the pedal again to release the choke, and she settles down and idles smooth again. Maybe that's what's happening with you, Boss50?

That does make sense...Now that I think about it, it only stumbles right after I start it up and start moving. Makes perfect sense now.

Hey Mikedogg, I prefer an electric choke. Reason being, once it is adjusted properly it will never foul your plugs like a manual can if you walk away from it too long.

I have a questiong about the offy dp intake for those of you that have them. There are two holes that go through the intake, what are these for? Ive been told they are to run the heater hsoes through, but didnt know how or how fuctional they would be. Im in the same perdicerment. It get to below 0* these last couple of years in NJ and this is my first year I have this setup on her. I just adjusted the idle on her, b/c before that when I started her she wouldn't even idle, but now she does. Only other problem is that she hesitates shifting.

the holes are for the stock exhaust manafold studs to mate the 2 for heat.
I run it & it sure helps it run better than my 1 bbl before.
