how many of u guys have been to the USS Alabama in Mobile? i've always wanted to go see a battleship and thats probably the closest to me here in illinois. plus they got lots of cool aircraft on display.been online and saw the damage katrina did- terrible. tore up the aircraft pavillion pretty bad, moved and listed the ship 4 degrees, collapsed the concrete gangway.hope they get it open soon.
I was on the Alabama two years ago when I was coming home from my girls' wedding in Charleston. Fantastic experience. It really makes you appreciate the WWII guys. It wasn't a pleasure cruiser for sure. I have been on the Battleship Texas several times. It is the oldest on display and had combat time in WWI and WWII. If the Alabama is damaged, it needs to be fixed. We as a people can't let history dissolve into the bay. Course, I have the same feelings about the Iowa class battleships as well. Any time you can go see a warship- go. There is more to them than the movies you have seen. There is a completely different ship on the inside from the cafeteria, dentist office, barbershop, magazine, turret loading, command center, anti aircraft guns, ammo dispensing systems, radar gun sights, engine room, machinist shop, sleeping quarters, bathrooms (now thats a trip), etc.
I posted a thread awhile back on how my glorious stupidvisors rejected the idea to have the U.S.S. Iowa (Iowa Class) berth here.
But that's ok, because it's suppose to berth not to far away in the Sacramento Delta.
I agree with Flash. By all means if you get the chance, visit these floating monuments, before they become just a memory or only just a picture in a book.
Got to go aboard the Alabama back in the 70's. Very educational. Don't know if she's still there, but I also went aboard the Lexington in Pensacola about the same time. If she is, it's only about an hour away, and well worth the trip.
Been to Nauticus a few times in Norfolk. If you ever get a chance to see the Wisconsin (or any Iowa class ship), do it. I've never seen a full salvo from the 16 inch batteries, but it has to be absolutely mind boggling.
If you're ever in DC, go check out the US Navy Memorial. Awesome. I don't know anyone who won't feel a twinge of pride standing there reading the quotes from famous naval sea battles. Our ancestors made some really tough choices and paid for our freedom with a lot of blood, sweat, and tears.

I know a few of these people (not personally) that don't feel that twinge of pride.
They happen to be the BORED OF STUPIDVISORS here, most who voted against the USS Iowa being berthed here.
By all means, go and visit these monuments and thank the men and woman who made it possible for you to have these freedoms, before this cancer (stupidvisors) spreads.
Yeah, but we all know SF isn't really part of the United States any more. More like another planet.
Hang in there. There are lots of folks who DO remember the sacrifices that have been made. Why don't those guys want the Iowa berthed there?
I really can't say, because the moderators would banish me (for what I would post), due to FTE rules, in which 2 of the 3 three categories would violate the rules of this forum.
BASICALLY BECAUSE OF THE ARMY'S “DON'T ASK, DON'T TELL POLICY.”
They need to get out of Dodge (SF), and go back to where they came from.
Oddly enough, the majority of the ones that voted against the Iowa are not from here, but other parts on the country.
The most complex thing I recall, was the near vertical stairs between decks.
We call them 'ladders' for that very reason. In fact, a real sailor (of the navy variety) will call every staircase a ladder out of habbit. I've never been to the USS Alabama, but I understand that it is a source of great pride for that community.
I really enjoyed my trip of the USS Alabama. I also liked the aircraft museum. They had a SR 71 which I find totally amazing. It was well worth the admission fee.
I live just across the Bay from the ship and have been there several times. It is a really neat place to visit. The aircraft hanger did receive a substantial amount of damage after Katrina so I'm not sure what its status is. I would also suggest going to Pensaclola and going to the Naval Air Station. They have a really neat museum over there as well. It's about an hour and a half from Mobile but definitely worth the trip.
If you come, let me know and I can help you with directions and the likes.

I remember seeing it as a kid on vacation with my parents. Really blew my mind. I kinda wanted to go for a spin, but..... As far as seeing historic warships, depending on where you are in IL, you could run to either michigan or Wisconsin to see some. I don't think there are any battleships on the great lakes, but I know of a couple submarines and similar smaller vessels.
