The 85 has a few problems.... mainly the computerized Motrocraft 2150A carb. Get some parts together, and Duraspark that baby.
If you can't afford to Duraspark it, get a code reader. About 35 bucks at any major parts house. Will save you tons of money in the long run. Since it is that old, and if the sensors have not been replaced, you may need to do so. Everyone here can tell you the pains of diagnosing a poorly running engine.
The 2.8L is a good engine. Way underpowered for the size of vehicle, but a great motor none-the-less. Mine does 0-60 in about 3 days...LOL
Avg gas milage, for a clean running 2.8, is around 15-20mpg, if you keep your foot out of it. If your tranny has overdrive, use it, you should gain a few MPG on the highway.
The Torque Converter should lock up at around 50MPH. This is the best place to run... The tranny stays much cooler. You will know when the TC locks up when the RPM drops without a gear change.
The hardest spark plug to get to is the passengers rear... I hate that one. If you have A/C, the easiest way to get to it is through the wheel well with a U-Joint type adapter.
If you have power windows, the lower support in the door is prone to break. If you close your door, and hear ratteling, that's prob what it is.
Check for leaks on your A4LD, the front and rear seals go out rather easily. Hot weather can cause them to spew fluid. A larger transmission cooler, or even two really helps in hot weather.
Since you live in Texas, I would def have the thermostat replaced, and the cooling system flushed.
The Bronco II has GREAT ACOUSTICS!! A stereo tuned to perfection will sound great! Tip... Mids and tweeters pointed at the rear side glass, at a 45deg angle is frickin awsome! Spreads the sound throughout the cab.
Hope this helps.
Congrats on your new ride!
