I just got in some new running boards from Sac Vintage, and was dismayed to see the two front holes are not in a perpendicular line out from the frame. (i.e., the outer front hole looks like it is punched further forward than the inner one) I looked at my brackets carefully, and sure enough they appear to be pointed slightly forward at the outer end on the front one, and slightly rearward on the rear bracket, with the center bracket and holes perpendicular to the frame.
My truck had been hit on the boards over the years, and I don't trust that they are crooked by design. I would have thought that ol' Henry would use the same (straight) bracket in all three locations. Is each bracket unique? or are my brackets bent and the new boards mis-punched?!
I just set a square on my running boards and the bolt on the outboard side appears to be about 1/8" forward of the bolt in the inboard side. This holds true on both running boards and mine are a little rusty but not that beat up. I was using the ribbing on the running board as my reference.
When I installed the new running boards on my 51 the drivers side went on ok I only had to drill a few holes to line them up. I just used fender washers on the bolts. On the passenger side everything was off, I thought the frame rail might be out of square. But I mananged to get it on and the truck handles and drives great, so I haven't worried about it. Rembering some of the things I watched my dad do with the old trucks like tie a chain to one frame rail and proceed to pull a tree stump out of the ground I'm not suprised nothing lines up these days.
Thanks for the info, and the offer for a bracket, but it appears mine are OK. I just wouldn't have thought they'd be splayed like that, it seems real unusual. I need to pull off my left rear fender to try the left running board on, but it looks good so far!
Ross,
Cool, I'm glad its working out for you. That seems totally wacko for Ford to do something like that. It would make tons more sense production wise to have the brackets be all identical.
