Creaking

I have a 1995 ford f150 that "creaks" when turning the wheels, when the transmission "lugs" from 1st gear and when stopping. It has gotten worse with the onset of colder weather. I have taken it to 3 different mechanics and none of them can find it. Ball joints have been ruled out as have most front end components. None of the mechanics have been even able to isolate where the noise is originating although one seems to think it is in the area of the transmission support area. He tightened the bolts but that did not do any good. I have greased what could be greased and wd 40ed what could not i.e leaf springs, coil springs bolts etc. Any ideas would be most appreciated

If it is a 2 wd look at the bushings on the rear of the radius arms.If you see any space or rub marks that is where the noise comes from.I prefer to cut off the rivets and replace them with grade 8 bolts. There are several post on replacing the bushings. Good Luck

Lightbulb Pops & Creaking...

I agree about the radius arm bushings.

Also...

There are certain issues with the creaking/popping when turning on our generation of F-Series trucks.

While you should certainly rule out normal wear items (as it sounds like you have), there is a crossmember that gets bound up as the frame flexes (while turning). Its the same crossmember that is at the rear of the transmission (taking off).

Basically you turn the steering wheel lock to lock and then leave the wheels centered. Then you loosen all the bolts (leave nut on them) on the "gusset crossmember" that runs under the rear transmission mount. You'll want the transmission supported with a floor jack, etc. while you do this (to take pressure off of the crossmember). I loosen all the bolts holding the crossmember to the frame and the bolts on the transmisison mount. Once the bolts are all loose you turn the front wheels lock to lock a few times and leave the wheels centered. Then you retorque everything back. I said Basically early on because there is a more complete set of steps in this thread:

Thanks for the info, I loosened the bolts and retighted them on Sunday, same sound, today I loosened them and left them loose, sound went away! This weekend I will tighten them down with lock washers and hopefully that will do it. Again thanks!
