Well I know why the truck shut down on the boy the othe night I've got oil being blown out the righthand exhaust and water running out between the motor and transmission. I haven't got the motor out yet to tear it down kind of afraid to what I might find. A junkyard replacement is an easy $1000 and a new drop-in is about $4000 and so I'm going to attempt to rebuild it. Any suggestions or things I should know about before I get strated I've done plenty of gas motors so this will be my first diesel. Wish me luck. Bill
sounds like we was a racin. If you're rebuilding, get the parts from international dealer and best get the heads magnafluxed. If the heads have to be shaved, dont forget that the pre-cup chambers will be lowered. sounds like a nice winter project.
Just finished a refresh $1500.00 for parts and machine work and I did the valve job. This did not include any pistons. I had to have .006 taken off the deck and the heads surfaced. Due to fire ring grooving. You are allowed .031 of piston above the deck mine was .016 after decking I have had no issues. If you need pistons add another $500 minimum. And most replacment piston sets come with .010 compression height reduction. These motors are not cheap to work on and the gasket sets are outrageous in price. But the last 460 gasser I totally rebuilt was about the same money.
