1998 Mountaineer AWD problems

I am new to this forum and hope to become a regular. I am being given a 98 Mountaineer AWD from an aged relative. This car has been babied and has never seen a dirt road. It has 60k miles. I will have to drive it 1500 miles back to my house and I would like to know what things should I look for that may be problematic with this model. I am most interested in learning about the AWD system. Any Suggestions?

1996 Explorer AWD 5.0V*

I recently sold my 96 Explorer Limited AWD with the 5.0 V8 which I believe is similar to your Mountaineer. It was one of the most reliable vehicles I've ever had. Just change all your fluids regularily (transmission, differential and transfer case). I changed the engine oil every 5,000 KM as well. Never burned a drop of oil between oil changes. The only trouble spots I had was the heating/cooling blend door broke which you can't do anything to prevent and the rear differential whined at between 95kmph and 105kmph. The AWD system performed well. In fact if I was able to get it on my new explorer I would have preferred it. I don't offroad and really don't need 4x4 low so the AWD was a good choice because you don't get any of those issues where the front wheels are engaging/disengaging.
