Passive repeater?

I have seen passive repeater antennas for cell phones, I know how they work. My question is are they just something that sticks on the window or is there a cord on the inside that needs to plug into the phone. Also, are they brand specific or do they work with any phone?

Some passive repeaters stick to the window, and some clip to a window. I thought that I saw a passive repeater that sat on the dash and had a cable that ran into an external antenna, but I might be dreaming.

There are also some cellphone antenna kits that will hook up the phone and has a cable to an external antenna, and those are phone specific. For example, my Motorola V551 has one. While I have actually seen them on the market for my phone, I pretty much can guess that most phones that have an antenna connection (usually on the back right below the antenna) will have one. Depending on your phone, if you have the connection, it will probably have a rubber or plastic deal plugging the hole to keep trash out of it. Mine is uncovered since I had the hardwired handsfree in my Mountaineer which the cradle had the antenna connection on it, but I have the bluetooth kit on the F-150, and I could cover the hole up if I can find the plug.
