I just got back from the local pick-a-part with a manual trans. but I don't know what it is. It came out of an 87 F150 RWD. It has an aluminum top loader case. The shifter is on top of the case and the shift lever threads onto the top. The numbers on the side are RF-E5TR-7006-AA.
Thanks for the reply. I have some more information. Even though there is no shifter on top I was able to reach in and shift the gears...here is what I found:
It is a 4 speed
high gear is OD
ratios are
1st 3.3:1
2nd 2:1
3rd 1:1
4th .8:1
Reverse in right and down
according to this http://www.f150online.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=211867 you probobly have an SROD since the ratios are the same as you posted but the reverse is setup like an NP435/T-18/19 but those trans are non OD and have a granny 1st
I think it is a Tremec, like mine, as Tremec made some trannies for Ford. Look at my pics in the gallery under "the project" (gotta update that thing)--it's painted red, but you should be able to tell if it's the same or not.
On the passenger side the tag says:
RTS AJ K026
E4TRJA 1015
On the driver's side, is stamped onto the housing:
RF E4JA(?) 7008(?) AJ(?)
82804877
5J626179 2
FORD L (that "Ford" is the oval stamp)
It's an RTS (Rug top-shifter), T-170 (I think).
Shifts like this:
1 3
2 OD R
Case is all aluminum, and it doesn't say "Tremec" anywhere. No drain plug either. Sound like yours?
Check it out.......maybe it is, maybe it isn't.....
I had it behind a 302 and I loved it, as it seemed to work well with that higher-revving engine. From reading the forums, the consensus seems to be that it is not the strongest of trannies. However, I found the setup to be perfect for what I needed: a dependable daily driver that I could take on the highway (without really high rpms, thanks to the OD) with only occasional heavy loads in back. Pretty easy to work on too.
I'm going to try it out behind my straight six shortly, we'll see how that goes.....
Behind a six it is not as good. You can't rev the six high enough to bridge the gap between 2nd and 3rd. A 1500 rpm drop from a 3000 rpm shift just doesn't cut it, especially on hills or with a load, or worst case, on a hill in a curve with a load...
Yeah, I've heard as much, but figured I'd try it out regardless as I already have a rebuilt one for free. If I run into problems with it, I can always switch it out. Thanks for the input.
I have already bought it and I am in the process of installing it in my '72, 302. What rear end ratio are you guys running? I have a 3:25 now and I figure that will be too high. What do you think?
I had 3.55 gears and it seemed to work well for me. Check out this website (http://www.4lo.com/calc/gearratio.htm) for a rpm calculator for your setup. What do you use the truck for anyway?
A little late in the discussion, but I do have that tranny behind a 300 I6 - the jump from 2nd to 3rd is too big of a jump. It was factory and is OK for a daily driver, but really have to rev 2nd when hauling. With the OD 4th, 3rd coulda been a little closer.
Anyhow - to be sure, the RF-E5TR casting means it is the T-170 then? Will this swap with a T-18 without any mods?
