Exclamation Strange problems with Y2K Explorer XLS

Recently I've noticed two distinct gauge problems on the dash...
  1. The Oil Pressure gauge, upon a cold start, will typically not move and thus the check engine light comes on... after a few minutes of driving the light turns off and the gauge registers a normal oil pressure reading? If the truck is started with a warm engine (recent use) then usually there isn't a problem with this gauge? Weird
  2. The Engine Temperature gauge, upon a cold start, will typically register normal temperatures - I commute from a rural town to a big city so as soon as I reach highway speeds after leaving my home the gauge soars up to almost the boiling point at which time either I put the tranny in neutral and coast a bit, or slow down and maintain a lower speed for 30-60 seconds and the gauge goes back down to a nominal temperature reading and holds. Haven't ever noticed this problem with a warm engine start.
What's going on??? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Probably a finicky oil pressure sending unit. If it were me, I'd probably just keep an eye on it. When it's at zero, be listening for unusual noises, ready to shut it off.
The gauge is probably OK. If you want to fix it, you could pay to have them do a mechanical oil pressure test to see what it actually is, or just change the sender and hope for the best.

I agree. Does the tranny start shifting funny?

As Bulldog said, #2 could be the t-stat. I'ts probably sticking closed the first time and then finally opening and then is ok for the rest of the drive. I suggest replacing it asap. At some point it could just stay closed, and you could be risking major repairs if it overheats.

#1's gotta be the sending unit. My '99 was doing the same thing, had the sending unit changed & no problem.
