while cleaning up, i found a box of old license plates. there a couple of ones from the 20's, but there very rusted. lots of illiniois plates, from 42 to the 80's. got 10 sets i think, of the same plate, different years. found a couple of local plates, lee county iowa. some of these plates arent metal, there some kinda fiberglass or somthing. are these things worth anything? should i try puttin a few of them on ebay, or is it worth it? thanks for the input.
I might want em, I collect old license plates for decorations on my walls in the shop. if you want to ship them to me, I can put them on my walls to make it look nice.
Here in NY, they allow you to put "vintage" plates on an older car, if it's the year that would have been on the car when new. They have to be in good shape, but vendors go around to all the car shows and get BIG money for them from suckers (like me... )
It WOULD be worth your time to throw them on Ebay. I paid $187.50 for a set of un-issued 1972 Texas plates for my 442.
If the plates have "good" numbers, they can go for a ton of bucks. (my "new" plates end in 442) I set my auction sniper to go up to $200.00 in order to have a shot at getting the plates!
Good luck--DON'T give 'em away!
People are paying bucks to have plates that match the vintage/exact year of their old car. Have a lookie on ebay to see what's going on. No give aways on them plates is needed.
The non metal plates are probably soy fiber plates. Illinois used soy fiber during the War years to conserve metal, you find them a lot on eBay. I collect license plates, and like some have mentioned, have paid a lot of money for some plates. Paid $187 for a pair of 1947 California commercial plates, and they need to be restored. They are worth money, especially if they are some of the rarer issues, likes trucks, farm, government, etc. Rusty paintless '30's through '40's plates don't seem to command much, but the pairs would. Put them on eBay, you might be surprised.

There are people who are in the business of restoring old plates and selling them at auto events, for pretty nice prices.
