I'm wanting to mount a Milemarker 12k hydraulic winch on my 06 SuperDuty, and am looking for recommendations for a winch mount. I've done some searches and not seen anything that I really liked.
Anyone have any ideas? I'm not looking for anything too gaudy. No brush cutters or light bars...just a plain winch and fair lead mount that does not look awful. Something chrome would be nice to compliment the bumper.
why on earth would you want a hydraulic winch???? say you are in water or mud and your engine either stalls or dies out, you have NO WINCH.. probably the cleanest look that you would find is to put a fron receiver on the truck and get a winch that you can mount in a carrier, then you can put it in the fron or back of the truck. thats what i have. rerember, when and if you get stuck, usually you need to be pulled out the way you came in. hense, put the winch in the back and pull yoursel out. and when the winch is not being used on those other days, you can put it in the truck or in your garage..
Racer, he has an '06 King Ranch, so I'm assuming he won't be going hood deep off-roading in this thing.
I think the big questions should be are: 1- how often do you plan to use the winch, 2 - what do you plan to use it on (weight wise and distance), 3 - do you want to tap into your power steering box for the hydro's.
Hydralics have their advantages. You can pull longer and at higher continous weights than you can with an electric. Then tend to last longer than the electrics under heavy usage. They are cheaper to fix if they do break than the electrics. They don't put a tremendous load on your electical system.
Some of the disadvantages are that they are generally slower than comparable electrics. The engine does have to be running to use it. They are not as easy to swap back and forth.
For occasional or recreational use, I would say go electric. They are pretty convienient if you do the recevier setup. If you are gonna use it continuosly, in a commercial / farm type environment, then I would say to get the hydraulic.
Dan, unfortunately most of the winch mount systems are pretty big and gaudy. I know Warn has a pretty decent setup that is modular and doesn't look too bad. I think it's the Transformer. Here's a link to the site.
commercial use, yes go hydraulic. but if you are going to use it in a controlled situation, straight on. i would mount it in the bed and get a PTO and run a winch that way. you can get a bigger winch capacity.. somewhere in the 20000# or more..
Racer, that's not what he's talking about. Yes, that application has it's uses, but he is just looking for a front mount setup.
Also, does he have the PTO option on the truck? Does he want to cut / drill into the bed to mount this thing? Does he want to do the fab work underneath to mount a 20K winch? Does he need a 20K winch? He'd tweek the truck with something like that.
if he is not doing alot of heavy pulling with it, its much easier and better to go electric then. again, i have the multi mount and with the carrier removed, thats the cleanest look. i also have the warn hs9500 winch. plenty for what we need. especially if you no how to rig up. just because people have winches does not mean they no how to use them. he did say "clean look" right. then messing around with the power steering system would have lines and all. also void his warranty.
Okay, first off it doesn't void his warranty, except to the part he would have to modify, which would be the power steering pump. The same could be said about the ENTIRE electrical system if he adds an electric, as it draws more current under load than the stock sytem is capable of producing. It's all a matter of if the modifications made cause dammage to the truck. Let's not get into the warranty issue as that is a dead horse.
Second, the hydaulic only has 2 lines coming though, just lke the electrics. A clean install is all a matter of taking your time to do a nice job on it.
Third, your front mount receiver is only rated for 9K line pull. That mean 9k, straight line. Not at an angle and by adding ****** blocks and other rigging, you are far exceeding this capacity. So that goes for knowing how to winch right their. Getting into rigging techniques is like having a debate on politics, there are a billion different view points and most of them suck.
Give the guy answers to the questions he asks, not just what you want or you think is the only way to go.
just opinions. some say electric, some say hydraulic. if someone doesnt like what they hear, they shouldn't ask for an opinion anyway...you have to think about what you plan to do with the winch. then you can decide which winch is the best one for the application you need..
Racer, did you even read the first post I put in here?
I'm not the one asking for the opinion, DAN is. But when the folks give opinions that are way outside the scope of the askers question and also (to me) seem pretty unsafe and unreasonable for the intended use, the voice of reason has to step in to keep in on track once in a while and not go off on tangents that steer off the track.
Racer, look at some of the responses you've gotten on some of your other posts. I see little trend of arguing things that don't fit the scope of the users question. If that's the case, read more and then offer usable / credible answers. Otherwise keep that crap in the Excursion forum.
i didnt say YOU, but "DAN" wanted to know what whinch mount. and he said he wanted a clean look. he didnt say that he already bought a winch. i asked HIM not YOU about a winch choice. AGAIN, OPINION, THE CLEANEST LOOK, DEPENDING ON WINCH USAGE, WOULD BE A MULTIMOUNT. AND AGAIN, DOES "DAN" REALLY NEED A 12000# WINCH OR DOES HE JUST WANT ONE? MAYBE "DAN" CAN PUT HIS OWN REPLY TO THIS THOUGHT AND OPINION.. THANKS.................
OK...yes, the original thread here is about the mount...so any help there is greatly appreciated.
Now, my choice of the Milemarker winch is personal. I like the cleaner install, ease of repair, water-proof operation, and the constant duty option of this winch. I'm not an off-roader, but I do a lot of camping at the coast in the summer for ATV riding on the Oregon sand dunes. I'll be needing this winch to pull my truck out if I sink it in the sand when sand camping (with the help of a pull-pal).
I may also do the odd "pull someone out of a ditch during an ice storm" work, and of course pulling *small* stumps (Admit it...you've wanted to try it).
So, pros and cons aside, I think the Milemarker hydro winch is neat...so that's what I'm gettin'.
Anyways, I'd love to see if anyone else out there has any more mounting ideas.
Dan, good to finally see YOUR reply. whatever you decide to do i wish you luck with it. Now knowing that you wont be in deep water or other stuff like that the hydraulic winch will work out great for you. also, now knowing that you want the 12000# winch, you wont be able to get a multimount for your truck. again, wish you luck in your search..
Looking at the Warn site, they have a "semi-hidden" winch mount that moves the stock bumper forward to mount the winch behind it. However, no guarantee that the MM winch will fit with the Warn kit (maybe...maybe not).
Warn is a local company (Clackamas, OR) so maybe I can get a look at one...
Just wanted to chime in about the Milemarker. I think it's a little underpowered for a Superduty. I had one on a Hummer, and it seemed like it was working the power steering pump really hard. I would get some strange noises on real heavy loads. This was on a 6500 pound wagon. My CC shortbed weighed 8300 at the dump. But as far as usability goes, the Milemarker is awesome. I ran that thing in three, four feet of water and it never failed. I've had water at the base of the windshield and the winch worked fine. I'm not sure why some people are saying you shouldn't use it in water. My suggestion is a Warn 16.5. That's what I'm going to go with eventually. It's a big chunk of money, though.
As far as mounting it, the Warn hidden mount seems like the most unobtrusive method. My only concern with a smaller mount is ripping it clean off the frame. Companies like Hanson and T.R.E.A.D. tie into the frame in something like 8 places. Thats the nice part about driving a Ford, there are a million options. Whatever way you go, good luck finding something.

my favorite mount is the warn behind the bumper kit. moves your stock bumper out 4-5 inches and winch sits behind. nice clean look and tough. ask the deer i hit last week
