My Windshield wipers randomly come on once in a while. I've noticed it more on a warmer day, but sometimes even when it is cold. There is really no pattern, sometimes the go once, sometimes they go for 2-3 minutes. Where should I start? Switch or wiper motor, maybe something else?
im gonna take a stab at it here, but my guess would be the switch on the turn signal. Ive had simliar issues with my switch(mostly it not wanting to work when i push in the switch to clean my windshield off/wiper washer .)Not sure if there are alot others that have had the same issue???? A search in this forum might be able to shed some light on your issue. Good luck
I just had that problem with my E450 motor home. the wipers would cycle at start up then the intermittant feature wouldn't work. I brought to the stealer for warrenty and the error code came up as a bad gage cluster? in any case they replace the gage cluster and the problem went away. Go figure. Scotty
Thanks for the info!! I'm really just baffeled because I can't find any reason for them to be doing this. All the functions work on the switch, no worry about them at all. Everything is nice and smooth, just have automatic wipers once in a while...haha. I'm gonna start taking things apart and see what I can muster up. Thanks again!!

Same on My 97' F-150, I gotta push the washer *** in numerous times before it starts to actually start spraying. And while on the intermittent setting, it just goes at whatever speed it wants to... I can click it up 3 notches or whatever, and the wipers will wipe every second, then every 12 seconds, all on the same setting... whatever speed they want... Wierd... It has to be the switch on the steering wheel, nothing else makes sence. Dirty electrical contacts or a loose wire arcing.
Replaced the switch on the column also. Replaced the motor too. Fixed problem for a while and is not doing same thing.
Works fine if i turn it on. Problem is it turns on randomly all the time.
Going to find the power wire and put an on/off switch and wire to my dash board.
The multi-switch may be worn out/broken. Also, the wiring harness on the upper steering column has a connector that was made or installed too short at the factory. When the adjustable steering wheel is moved into the up position, the wire pins pull out of the harness inside the gray connector and cause intermittent contact causing all kinds electrical items to behave bizarrely. I had to go to the junk yard and find one that was not damaged, cut it out, then reinstall each wire pin in the new connector body. I then loosened the zip ties holding the harness in place and pulled up some more slack in the column and installed new zip ties tightly. Problem solved.
Definitely worth cleaning if your wipers are turning on randomly. I've also heard that if the Generic Electronic Module gets wet via a leaking windshield, that random electrical things will happen like wipers turning on, windows going down on their own, etc. I've never witnessed that, but do know that a GEM is not a cheap item to replace.
