Hi all ! New to the site ... lots of really good info here. Im going to be replacing the Power Steering pump on my 1990 F250 and understand from other articles here that I need a special tool for taking the pulley off and putting it on.
Does anyone know where i can get this tool online or what the tool is called ?
its called 'power steering pump pulley remover for ford vehicles'. just kidding, call up your local auto store that rents tools and ask if they have it, they should know what you need. none of the articles says where to get one at?
Ive done this repair before. Just go to your local dealer or service station after you get the pump removed. They should be more than willing (after you throw them a 10 spot) to take the pulley off for you. But DO NOT try and remove the pulley with a gear puller. You will bend or crack the pulley trying to get it off. The new pump comes with a bolt and a washer to re-install the pulley. When you re-install the pump make sure to refill the system and run it all the way to the left then to the right and back to the center. It will make a horrible screeching sound but that is normal. Check the fluid, it should be foamy. Then top off the resivorir and continue the process. After a few times the screeching sound should go away. If u have any questions feel free to ask!
I was under the impression that you couldn't remove the pump until you got the pulley off. I've looked at my truck and I don't see how it will come off any other way.
On the 1988 F-150 with a 302 that i worked on, you couldnt. The p/s pump was mouned to the motor by an aluminum bracket thingy and you had to use a puller to get the pulley off. Then there were bolts behind the pulley that held the pump to the bracket.
Hey just wondering, cause the topic came up, how do you know when your p/s pump is failing or is failed. Is it when it makes a weird sound when you turn the steering wheel or what. That is what is happening to my brothers Lincoln Car, and I think my truck is starting to do the same thing but not as intense of a sound. What are the symptomes of a failing p/s pump before it fails?
don - Be careful which pulley puller you get, as the diameter of the the hub it fits on changed, but I'm not sure which year it changed. Yes, you have to remove the pulley to get the pump off, regardless of whether the pump and bracket are in the truck or not.
The way the tool is made, you can get the pulley off with the radiator in place, but you have to pull the radiator to put the pully back on.
Being as you're in NJ, you might check with Frederic, or some of the other guys from your chapter. Maybe somebody has one.
