They both have diff blocks of course but the heads are what seperate them from the men to the boys. The 351M has bigger intake and exhuast valves unlike its smaller brother. My personal opinion is the 351M is better.
I disagree, Why would you pick an engine that is capable of only 140 Hp as ooppsed to an engine that so many things can be done to it,to make it a real performer ?
The Windsor is a much better engine.
The 351M is a boat anchor,IMHO.
The 351 W is basically a 302 with Huge heads and capabale of tons of torque and HP..
perhaps the only redeeming value of an M is cleveland heads can be installed easy enough and you can turn it into a 400 just by changing
crank and pistons.
otherwise, the M should stand for marine because it is an excellent choice for an anchor.
we're all FORD fans here, lets be honest...the 351m/400 is looked down upon because it was weighed down with every emissions component possible and disgusting compression. those are the only reason why people dont like the engine. my 79 f250 has 216,000 miles on its 351m--i bought it in sept from the guy who bought it brand new. the engine has never been rebuilt and still runs great. i am totally rebuilding the truck frame up, so it will get a total rebuild soon into a 400!! my thoughts are the windsor makes a better car, street, or 4x2 truck engine, and there are hundreds of performance parts for it. the 351m can easily be turned into a 400, which will give you "stump pulling" torque at low rpm. becuase of the 2v heads it promotes low end power which is what you need for a big 4x4 in the trails.
overall both are great FORD engines, and both are very rebuildable for Hi-Po applications.
the only such thing as boat anchors are ch-vy and d-dg- engines!!!!

Jimbo,
If I had unlimited money and had to pick the motor with the most potetial, it would be the 351M.
Unfortunately, I'm a working smo. The 351W will give me more for simple bolt on parts bought over the counter and there are plenty of Hi-performance parts for the 351W. This is not the case for the "M".
M might stand for Mild, Medium, or your "Mom's 351". Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with your mom!
That must mean that "W" must stand for wild! Hey, let's all argue about that for the next week!
