Is anyone using any of the web accelerator software that's advertised to speed up a dial-up connection? My work connection is SLOW and pages take forever to load, regardless of whether there's pictures or not. I see the software advertised all the time but wasn't sure if it's worth the $$ or just a load of poo.
It's mostly poo. What happens is your ISP caches the most popular web pages on its servers. With the "accelerator" you move faster because you are accessing the cached page on their server as opposed to the server going out and getting the page "live." That's a pretty basic explanation. So yes, it will speed up a little and usually only with the more popular pages. You cannot overcome the limitations that exist on a dial-up connection. The modems aren't designed for it.

From what I've read, thats part of the 'accelerator' package. They also compress webcontent at the server and then send it over the tele lines to your comp that decompresses it. I've never used it, and personally don't know anyone who has, but I read a review online about it and it said it was a definite improvement, but nothing like broad band.
What are the cost's of the web accelerator? If its cheap, I might give it a go, cause this broad band ain't cheap.
I have netscape and the excelerator is free, only 9.95 a month and it does speed it up quite a bit, the pictures are a lower quality though. it does work though! cable is still the best if you want to spend the $40.00 a month
I don't know whats available in your area, but in Pennslyvannia there are a couple different Telephone companies in competition for your business. I chose Cavalier Telephone company because they offer a DSL package for $24 a month. Thats not much more then dial up and a heck of alot faster.
Accelerators work just fine. Actual transfer date is not changed, but the data is is packed for transfer, then unpacked. Net result is definitely faster.Of course if DSL is available, it's better and faster. As low as only $19.95 for Ultra Lite (twice as fast as dial up) in some markets. Same for cable. Starting at $19.95 in some areas. I pay $26.95 for Lite service. Download 300 Kbps. Upload 150 Kbps.
My trouble is I'm all over the place for work so I'm always relying on a dial up connection. If it was only 1 location I'd pay the $$ for broadband. Oh well, I'm complaining about "slow" speeds that people would have killed for 10 years ago. It could always be worse.
Ever thought about getting a wireless card and hopping on the net at coffee shops, hotels, etc? Also, I can connect my cell phone to the laptop and browse the internet at 144k. With the new EVDO coming out from Verizon, it should be around 400k.
Spokane is an odd place, not quite a big city and not a small town . . . just in between. Verizon does no yet have broadband wireless here. When they finally do that then I'll go that route. I do have a wireless card but because I'm in so many locations a lot of them have different networks and I don't want to have to pay seperately at each one to use the internet.
Yeah, my server offers "web acceleration" too but it did nothing for my friend who used it. We live in a very rural area, in a small community and the telephone switching station is seven miles away. Those within town will get better modum rates than those further out because our phone lines are pretty....well...antiquated and the company figures there are not enough people to warrent fixing this.
So, those that can afford it do go with DSL/satelitte if they can. Our server does offer it but not in our area.....
