I saw in the FAQ section that for the VIN, a "3" as the first number indicates that Mexico / incomplete vehicle. What does that mean?
Does it mean they are only assembling the chassis or something there, and then shipping it here for final assembly, or they are assembling these there to be completed as specialty vehicles like ambulances. What's the deal? I know Ford produces F-series trucks in Cautitlan but I was sure those were not for the US or Canada.
It was my understanding that one reason Ford wanted to sell the Louisville heavy truck line so that it could use the Louisville plant for Super Duty production.
KTP also needed room for Excursion production and profit margins were not as large on heavy trucks as the SuperDuty/Excursion. The line doesn't run as fast with medium & heavy duty trucks either, figure 40/hour vs. as much as 60/hr on SuperDuty's, at least in America.
If you're looking at new trucks, then the final assembly plant is listed at the bottom of the window sticker.
Nearly all of the Mexican plant's production is shipped overseas, but once in a while I'll get a regular cab that was built there. You'd really have to hunt to find a truck on an American Ford dealer's lot that was built in Mexico. Currently, every S/D in my inventory came from Louisville.
I've owned four (4) Super Duty trucks. Of those, two ('00 & '01) were assembled in Mexico and two ('02 & '05) in Kentucky. All four were purchased new in Oklahoma.
I have an '84 F250 that was built in Canada .... Ontario Truck Plant.
Is that plant still building anything?
BTW, General Motors just closed their last plant in my state of New Jersey, where they were building Jimmy's and little pickups (and Wildcats for the Navy during WWII). Ford closed thier last plant here about 8 years ago. No more auto assembly in NJ ..... used to have many plants here.
mine was ktp. but as to ford plants i remember edgewater, mahwah were i worked a second job for many years and edison all gone.
gm gave up tarrytown and the one on route nine in linden across from the air port.
I grew up in Linden, my mother still lives there. The GM plant was such a fixture in Linden, and all the chemical plants, etc ----- all gone. It's a strange sight seeing that huge plant empty. And the little Conrail yard next to it empty also.
Long ago there was a assembly plant in Elizabeth. Durant Car Co., on Newark Avenue. Long building with an assembly line. Last time I was in that area, it was a cookie/cracker factory..... Burry Biscuit or something.
