262 distributor

I am in final assembly of my 5 year project and installed the distributor last night. My question is: When i installed it it does not seem to seat all the way down. There is a lip in it that I feel needs to seat to the block but it is about a 1/4" above the block. Is this right?

it needs to go all the way down, if it isn't, its becuase the oil pump drive isn't linning up, just crank the engine over till it drops in.

Is the 262c.i. the '61-'63 engine where it's mounted on the Timing Gear cover or the '64-'65 where it's mounted the same as the 223c.i.?
No matter what, you still need to get it seated all the way down, the former will just be a Tick easier to do than the former is all.

It is mounted like the 223. It has seated in the oil pump, maybe not all the way. Last year I remember just dropping it in and think it seated all the way to the bottom. Now I have turned the motor completely over and it is srill not dropping in. I measured the opening and the flange on the distributor and they are the same size. Tells me it is a press fit. Should it be nessesary to tap it in?

Did you have it all the way in with the oil pump installed ? I ran into this when rebuilding a 223 - the new oil pump had a 1/4 hex and the dist. shaft was 5/16 as was the old pump. Just a thought.

Yup, it has been just sitting. It seats in the oil pump and turns with the motor.

I took a break from the project (wife was out off work, $$$) got back into it and this is what I experienced the other day. I am going to be on the project this weekend (i'm self employed and never get to take time off) I am finally taking the weekend off to work on her and watch the Redskins game. I have another distributor I may try.
