i have had problems with one of my 2 1990 f250 7.3l diesel pick-up trucks. i turn the key on. and the wait to start light goes out with in 2 seconds. the only way i can start the truck is with either, or sit and crank for 10 minutes and smoke a starter. i replaced the gp relay all the wires look fine, cleaned all the terminals while reassembling, assuming this was the problem. i still have the same problem. light goes out almost insatantly when you turn the key on. the glow plugs were replaced about a year ago with motorcraft plugs. assuming its not the glow plugs. where is the controler located. thanks...dave
Welcome to the forum dsm2362.
I don't know where the controller is on your trucks. Perhaps a search of the forum would be fruitful. Up near the top of this page you'll see a blue band with words on it. Click on "search" then "advanced".
Check the glo plugs 1st.Get a test light, put the clamp on ths pos batt post, pull wire off glo plug and touch test light to where you removed the wire from the glo plug,if it lights its good. Most times a short wait to start light is due to a couple of bad glo plugs. The controller is between the air breather and the fire wall mounted on the intake man.
An air leak in the fuel system will cause the some hard starting problems too. But I would look to the relay and glow plugs first.
Then look for cracked fuel & return lines.
yes indeed the glow plugs were the problem. replaced them last night, with good motorcraft plugs and the problem is fixed. thanks to all for the help...dave
