4.0 low power and stalling problem

Hello,
I'm new here but I like what I've reviewed in the last hour. Here's what I have:

I'm looking at purchasing a 1993 4.0 extended Aerostar. It is 200 miles from where I live so I haven't driven it yet. It appears to be a very nice, well cared for southwest vehicle with 113,000 miles on it. The current owner states that it "sometimes sputters and loses power on hills. It will also die but restart and run fine after a couple minutes wait." He has replaced the O2 sensor and the fuel filter. The check engine light has come on only a couple of times.

A mechanic friend does not think that it is the "computer" and thinks it might be something other than the fuel pump. I don't want to buy it and then dump $500-$1,000 into it chasing this problem but I will spend money fixing it if I have an idea of what is wrong and can buy it right. I usually do my own wrenching. What is the opinion of the experts out there?

Welcome!

hhhhmmm.... There could me numerous things wrong with it. Do you know if he changed the plugs & wires? That would cause a stumble. Also the 4.0L does need a seafoam cleaning every once in a while to get rid of carbon buildup. Of coarse it could also have tranny problems, depending if it towed or not. Also about that age the IAC needs cleaned or replaced (which would explain the stall at idle.) Also a good MAF cleaning might help also with both stalling and poor performace.

So far what I have listed (if you do the work yourself) won't run you more than $250 and your time (except tranny)

If the price is right, I would check it out and make sure to take a code reader, that will help point you in the right direction.

sounds to me like you may have an over heat problem as well, I had a bad connection to my fuel pump relay which would cause some of the problems you have listed and I found out that a bad connection in one of the two big block connectors just above the engine was causing the problems, water had gotten into the connector and was causing a short to the fuel pump relay and the fuel injectors, I cleand out the connector and put in a load of dilectric grease and have not had the problem since.

CBR,
There is a recall regarding the fuel pump wiring harness and over heating of it. Do you know if your connector block problem is part of the recall? Thanks everyone for responding.
