I have Comcast high speed internet for my computer, and my little brother just got a computer in his room. What is the correct way to run internet to his computer from mine? I only have one cable modem.
You need a router and then just run a cable to his room and plug it into the router. OR what I like better is get a wireless router and then get a wireless card for his computer and you don't have to hassle with cables. They're not very expensive.
Tret, I just wanted you to know I'm proud of you. You have multiple computers with broadband access, and a porch made out of pallets I'm glad I can say I've met you.
Yeah, what Ivan said. You can get a router for around $45. If you go wireless you may have to buy a wireless card, as most PC's today have built in ethernet ports, but typically only laptops have built in wireless. If you go wireless, make sure you understand how to secure it.
unless you had a cantenna...at college i ran a cantenna out my window and was getting on peoples internet from over a mile away. Some guys build them for 5 mile range...you dont need a strong wireless router...you need a strong antenna...build cost for one of these is less than a tater gun...
edit: i personally dont use wireless for a reason...i just bore holes in the cealing. my hub (basically a router) cost me 20 bucks, and it works fine.
You will connect the cable modem to the router. Your PC's then plug into the router also.
You use a cat-5 patch cable to connect the PC to the router. It looks like a big phone cable.
The router gives you a pretty nice level of protection from hackers too.
